Special Weather Statement
Issued: 6:55 PM Jun. 17, 2026 – National Weather Service
...Increased Fire Danger Across Northeast North Carolina Thursday... Dry, hot, and breezy conditions are expected Thursday. The ongoing drought has led to abnormally dry dead surface fuels across the region. Minimum RH values of 30 to 40%, with wind gusts to 20 to 30 mph and afternoon highs in the mid to upper 90s ahead of an approaching cold front will lead to an increased fire danger across northeast North Carolina Thursday afternoon. Dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. People in this area are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks, and keep vehicles off of dry leaves and grass.
