In January 2025, a deep-sea camera captured a sleeper shark cruising 490 meters below the surface in Antarctic waters — the first shark ever recorded this far south. The 10-to-13-foot shark was moving through near-freezing water off the South Shetland Islands, a region experts long believed was too cold for sharks. Researcher Alan Jamieson couldn't find any prior record of a shark in the Antarctic Ocean.
