Winter Storm Causes Hundreds Of Collisions

Winter Storm Gianna left a mess across North and South Carolina, dumping up to a foot of snow in some places. More than 100 drivers were caught in a pileup on Interstate 85 north of Charlotte Saturday night. The National Guard had to roll out and help clear stalled vehicles. Charlotte Douglas International Airport clocked 11 inches of snow, Harrisburg got 13, and cities like Kannapolis, Concord and Salisbury were sitting just under a foot. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol had responded to 750 collisions statewide by Saturday night — none were fatal. Across the Lake Norman area, Huntersville, Mooresville and Troutman all saw at least 11 inches, while upstate South Carolina got anywhere from less than an inch to nearly 5 inches

Heavy snow and bitterly cold temperatures made the job tougher for at least two teams of North Carolina firefighters on Sunday. House fires had to be fought in Morehead City and Nags Head. No injuries were reported.
