New York Breaks Out Hot Tubs To Melt Mountains Of Snow

With temperatures stubbornly remaining below freezing for long stretches, New York City has turned to the Trecan Combustion 60-PD Snowmelter, known on the streets as the “hot tub.” These orange behemoths can melt 120 tons of snow an hour. Javier Lojan, acting sanitation commissioner, told The Weather Channel’s Stephanie Abrams the city has 13 of the machines operating around the city’s five boroughs. Lojan said it may take another couple of weeks before all the piles of snow are cleared.

Six-Foot Snowpile On Semi Smashes Stop Light

A semitractor-trailer driver had an unwelcome winter surprise in Michigan. As the semi drove along northbound U.S. 31 in Grand Haven Township, a 6-foot pile of snow on the trailer smashed a traffic light. Deputies with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office stopped the truck. Michigan State Police were also called to the scene and they refused to let the truck leave until the snowpile was cleared.
