Frigid temperatures across much of the U.S. didn’t stop people from getting outside to witness a stunningly beautiful display of the northern lights.

Get ready for a weather whiplash! After a record cold snap early this week, a pattern change will bring a big warmup across much of the country. The exception will be across the Northeast, with temperatures at or below average. Areas in the Northern Plains and Ohio Valley that have snow on the ground will see highs soar into the 60s and 70s by Thursday and Friday. The warmth will peak for many on Saturday, but will continue across the Deep South and Southeast into next week.

The first snowfall of the season brought flurries to Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo. While some of the animals were curious about the stuff falling from the sky, one resident seemed decidedly unimpressed.

A strong storm system will bring multiple days of heavy rain to California starting Thursday and lasting through Sunday. The heaviest rain will fall across Northern California Thursday into Friday, shifting south into Southern California, including Los Angeles, this weekend. Several inches of rain will be possible, which could lead to burn scar flooding and landslides. Watch this video for the latest update.
