Thanks for the laughter, Maxine! Didn't we all do things like that when we were kids? It was the river behind our place I got in trouble for!!
This pit lake is probably a little bigger than the pond you were on---it's over a mile long and several hundred feet deep, though the scale doesn't show so well in this photo. That's the city of Virginia in the trees in the background on the left. The far horizon is probably 40+ miles away.

We have this kind of thing in central Iowa where I'm from. Strip mines for coal and the ponds and hills are used in several ways. One place they used them for motorcycle trails. Brings back memories. My Aunt had one in her back pasture. Two "very wise" youngsters, my cousin and I first checked to make sure the ice was thick before playing on it. Back at the house we made the mistake of telling the grown-ups what fun we had! Wow!! The Grandaddy of all lectures! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!! do that again. Well, they hadn't told us not to. LOL 10 from SW Iowa

About minnesotamom

Hi! My name is Kathy and I live in northern Minnesota, USA, where the winter temps have dipped down to -60º below zero F. The summers used to be mild but in recent years have been up in the 90ºs. I love being able to travel the world from my office chair, through all your great photos! I've learned tons about photography and editing photos thanks to all the great people on here and their willingness to share tips. Thank you to all you Wunderfriends who take time to look and leave notes---I deeply appreciate it. :-)
