Caption: Peace Lilies, botanically known as Spathiphyllum, are members of the Aroid family, and indigenous to the shady forest floors of the tropics. In caring for Peace Lily plants, we are also helping them to care for us! Spathiphyllums were among the top ten plants in the Clean Air Study conducted by NASA, and were shown to be highly effective at removing formaldehyde, benzine, and carbon monoxide from the air! It is named for its white blooms, which resemble flags of peace. Botanically, a spath is a bract (modified leaf) enclosing a flower cluster or spadix (fleshy spike). The elegant white spaths on peace lilies are referred to as their flowers. They have a delicate fragrance and are popular houseplants.
