Saint Paul, MN (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: Ice sculpture that made 1st place in their contest. 7 Shot HDR. Overall I was surprised not to see more ice sculptures than what I saw, but I heard the cold snap, sub zero temperatures on Friday night made it especially difficult to the sculptures. It caused the ice to shatter frequently. But that's just what someone said. I'm not so sure it would be true.

Gorgeous sculpture. Can't wait to email it to my next door neighbor in FL, who was raised in Minnesota.

Nice image, Mary! I miss the Winter Carnival, but would just as soon stay indoors and look at pictures of it rather than crack my old bones with the cold, LOL!

Thanks. It was not something the guy told me directly, but I overheard him talking to someone else. I was standing for quite a while taking 10-30 second exposures. I noticed this year compared to the other year I was there, a lot of shattered ice blocks scattered around the area, so probably, WurzelDave your observation would be likely accurate.

Great shot, what you have been told about the ice shattering due to the cold is probaly true.
At the ice hotel in Sweden once they have harvested the ice out of the Torne river they store it in large freezer warehouses at around -5c ready for the next build the following winter. If the outside air is too cold when the ice is taken out of the warehouse it can crack & shatter due to the temperature difference (rather like putting ice cubes into a cold drink).

About Fieldofflowers

Every day that I come here, I'm amazed by the awesome photos I see. I love to take photos of whatever catches my eye. Usually my photos have something to do with nature. Insects and flowers have always been a big interest. You can also find me on Flickr. Summer '09 goal: Aiming to take pictures daily, and upload some of my favorites. I hope people enjoy them as much as I do. Most of the time, the fun comes from taking the pictures, more than the actual results. Create your own visitor map! Counter started: 6-21-09
