The National Weather Service in Riverton has issued a * Flash Flood Warning for... South Central Big Horn County in central Wyoming... Northern Washakie County in central Wyoming... * Until 730 PM MDT. * At 428 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen on the normally dry washes and gulches that feed into the Nowood River upstream of Manderson. The expected rainfall rate is 1 to 2 inches per hour with current thunderstorms. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. * Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Mainly rural areas of South Central Big Horn and Northern Washakie Counties along the Nowood River upstream of Manderson. This includes the following streams and drainages... Betonite Ridge Draw, Paint Rock Creek, South Fork Brokenback Creek, Hidden Dome Draw, Nowood River, Sand Creek, Zeisman Dome Draw, East Fork McDermotts Gulch, Buffalo Creek, Weintz Draw, Brokenback Creek and Big Cottonwood Creek. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads. In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low spots and normally dry water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Northern Washakie County in central Wyoming... * WHEN...Until 700 PM MDT. * IMPACTS...Rises in small streams and normally dry washes and draws. Dangerous flows over low-water crossings. Some low-water crossings may become impassable. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 353 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. This will cause small stream flooding. Rapid river rises will cause minor flooding in the advisory area. Between 0.5 and 1 inch of rain has fallen. - This includes the following streams and drainages... Betonite Ridge Draw, Paint Rock Creek, Hidden Dome Draw, Nowood River, Sand Creek, Zeisman Dome Draw, Buffalo Creek, Weintz Draw, Brokenback Creek and Big Cottonwood Creek. This advisory is along the Grass Creek in far western Hot Springs County. * WHEN...Until 515 PM MDT. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Rises in small streams and normally dry arroyos. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 331 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. This is causing small stream flooding. Rapid river rises have already caused minor flooding in the advisory area. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... In north central Wyoming, Bighorn Mountains Southeast and Bighorn Mountains West. In west central Wyoming, Salt River and Wyoming Ranges and Upper Green River Basin Foothills. * WHEN...Until 11 PM MDT this evening. * IMPACTS...Quick water rises on area streams and rivers, especially on small drainages in the mountains and foothills, leading to localized flash flooding, which could endanger people and infrastructure near waterways. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Slow-moving showers and thunderstorms will have abundant moisture today, with dew points in the 50s and 60s, and precipitable water values in excess of 1 inch.
