Special Weather Statement
Issued: 11:17 PM Jan. 20, 2026 – National Weather Service
...EXTREMELY COLD TEMPERATURES AND A WINTRY MIX EXPECTED THIS FRIDAY
INTO THE WEEKEND...

An arctic cold front will bring very cold temperatures to West Texas
as early as late Thursday night. This will result in Friday's high
temperature possibly occurring before sunrise with temperatures
dropping steadily through the day. Saturday will be the coldest day
with high temperatures struggling to reach into the mid teens. Low
temperatures Saturday and Sunday mornings will be in the single
digits area wide with near zero degree lows possible Sunday morning
across the far southern Texas Panhandle and the northern South
Plains. Dangerously low wind chills are also expected Saturday and
Sunday mornings, dropping to below zero area wide. Temperatures are
not expected to rise above freezing until Monday afternoon.

A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will also be possible Friday
evening through Sunday afternoon. At this time, the best potential
for freezing rain will be across the southern and central Rolling
Plains Friday evening before transitioning to snow possibly mixed
with sleet around midnight Friday night. Though any ice
accumulations are expected to be light, this will create hazardous
driving conditions. The chance for freezing rain across the South
Plains, far southern Texas Panhandle, and northern Rolling Plains is
low.

Stay tuned to the National Weather Service forecasts for updates and
additional information over the coming days.
