Rip Current Statement
Issued: 5:13 PM Apr. 5, 2026 – National Weather Service
...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK IN EFFECT THROUGH MONDAY EVENING... * WHAT...Dangerous rip currents. * WHERE...Kenedy Island, Willacy Island and Cameron Island Counties. * WHEN...Through Monday evening. * IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Seas and swell period are steadily increasing in the wake of a cold front and building high pressure across the northwest Gulf this afternoon through Monday. Wave heights of 6 to 8 feet or higher, a swell period reaching 8 seconds, and a northeast swell direction ensures dangerous rip currents through Monday. Though weather conditions are poor Sunday afternoon and fair to poor Monday, surf temperatures in the 70s are sufficient for some to attempt venturing into the water. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. &&
