Marine Weather Statement
Issued: 6:47 AM May. 25, 2026 – National Weather Service
...Cold Water Safety Concerns Today...

Air temperatures will rise into 70s this afternoon. However,
water temperatures remain in the 50s.

The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia and
physical incapacitation to anyone suddenly immersed in the water.
When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average
submerged person could lose dexterity within minutes and be unable
to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone going out on small boats, canoes
or kayaks should plan accordingly and use extreme caution to avoid
this threat.

Several things to consider...

* Always wear a life jacket.

* Dress for the water temperatures, not air temperatures. Wear cold
water protection, like a wetsuit or drysuit.

* Carry an Emergency Position Indication Radio Device.

* File a float plan with someone you trust.

* Check the latest marine weather forecast, including water
temperatures at www.weather.gov/okx/marine before you go out on
the waters.

Your ability to survive cold water immersion depends on your ability
to stay afloat and stay warm until help arrives.

Rip Current Statement
Issued: 6:34 AM May. 25, 2026 – National Weather Service
...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING...

* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents.

* WHERE...Kings (Brooklyn), Southwest Suffolk, Southeast
Suffolk, Southern Queens and Southern Nassau Counties.

* WHEN...Through this evening.

* IMPACTS...Life-threatening rip currents are likely for all
people entering the surf zone. Anyone visiting the beaches
should stay out of the surf. Rip currents can sweep even the
best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If you enter the surf zone, always have a flotation device with
you and swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax
and float, and do not swim against the current. If able, swim in
a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face
the shore and yell or wave for help.
