At 456 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated a strong thunderstorm, capable of producing winds to around 30 knots and lightning strikes. This thunderstorm was located near Union Beach, moving northeast at 20 knots. The strong thunderstorm will be near... Raritan Bay around 500 PM EDT. Sandy Hook Bay around 505 PM EDT. Sandy Hook around 510 PM EDT. Lower New York Harbor around 515 PM EDT. The Verrazano Narrows Bridge around 520 PM EDT. Upper New York Harbor and Rockaway Inlet around 530 PM EDT. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Mariners can expect gusty winds to around 30 knots, locally higher waves, and lightning strikes. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until this storm passes. Lightning is occurring with this storm. If caught on the open water stay below deck if possible, keep away from ungrounded metal objects. &&

...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING... * WHAT...Dangerous rip currents expected. * WHERE...Kings (Brooklyn), Southern Queens and Southern Nassau Counties. * WHEN...From Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening. * IMPACTS...Life-threatening rip currents are likely for all people entering the surf zone. Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The rip current risk will increase through the afternoon, especially for the western ocean beaches. The higher risk may carry into a portion of Friday as well. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... If you enter the surf zone, always have a flotation device with you and swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, and do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and yell or wave for help. &&
