North Central Luna County in southwestern New Mexico... * Until 1115 PM MDT. * At 952 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 3 and 3.5 inches of rain have fallen. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. * Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Mainly rural areas of North Central Luna County. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. ...FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT... * WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible. * WHERE...Portions of south central and southwest New Mexico, including Sierra, Dona Ana, Luna, and eastern Grant Counties and the Sacramento Mountains in northern Otero County. * WHEN...Through late tonight. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, arroyos, low water crossings, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - 24-hour rainfall observations shows a wide swath of 1-2" across much of south-central New Mexico. High soil moisture will allow runoff to occur quickly with any additional rounds of rain. Thunderstorms are expected to track north across the Watch area Thursday night into Friday morning, leading to localized flash flooding.
