Southwestern Dona Ana County in south central New Mexico... * Until 315 PM MDT. * At 118 PM MDT, a dust channel was 15 miles east of Columbus, moving west at 20 mph. HAZARD...Less than a quarter mile visibility with strong wind in excess of 50 mph. SOURCE...Law enforcement. IMPACT...Dangerous life-threatening travel. NM 9 from Columbus to Santa Teresa is closed both ways due to high winds and blowing dust. Locations impacted include... Columbus, Santa Teresa, Chamberino, La Union, Union Pacific Intermodal Terminal, Mount Riley, Camel Mountain, and Kilbourne Hole. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Dust storms lead to dangerous driving conditions with visibility reduced to near zero. If driving, avoid dust storms if possible. In addition, this includes the Far West Texas counties of El Paso and Hudspeth. * TIMING...Tuesday and Wednesday between 11 AM and 9 PM. * WINDS...West 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. * RELATIVE HUMIDITY...7-9 percent across the lowlands. 10-15 percent over area mountains. * EXPERIMENTAL RFTI...5 to 7 or Critical to Extreme. * IMPACTS...Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
