Special Weather Statement
Issued: 5:22 PM Apr. 24, 2026 – National Weather Service
...INCREASED FIRE DANGER ON SATURDAY ACROSS THE SANDHILLS AND COASTAL PLAIN OF NORTH CAROLINA... Breezy winds between 15-20 mph are expected during the day on Saturday. In addition, relative humidity values are likely to decrease to 20 to 30 percent during the afternoon hours. While there will be an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon, storms may initially arrive with a risk of lightning but with limited rainfall. The combination of all of these factors will result in an increased risk of wildfires and fire spread. Dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks, and keep vehicles off of dry leaves and grass. A statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service is currently in place. Open burning of any kind is illegal.
