...WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 2 AM EDT FRIDAY... * WHAT...Northeast winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts 40 to 50 mph. * WHERE...East Carteret and Mainland Dare Counties, and Hatteras Island, Northern Outer Banks, and Ocracoke Island. The strongest winds are expected for areas adjacent to bodies of water. * WHEN...Until 2 AM EDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A strong coastal low will develop offshore east of the Carolinas and move north towards the New England coast by this weekend. A period of moderate to strong winds is expected to impact portions of the coast Thursday. These strong winds may last longer depending on the track of the low. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Up to 1 foot of inundation is possible for sound-side flooding from Buxton southward/westward when winds become more northerly late Thursday and Friday. For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 10 to 15 feet in the surf zone. For the Beach Hazards Statements, dangerous rip currents, large breaking waves, and strong longshore currents in the surf zone. * WHERE...Hatteras Island. * WHEN...For the Coastal Flood Warning, until 11 PM EDT Friday. For the High Surf Advisory, until 8 PM EDT Saturday. For the first Beach Hazards Statement, until 8 PM EDT this evening. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Dangerous shore break can throw a swimmer or surfer head first into the bottom causing neck and back injuries. Strong longshore currents will create dangerous swimming conditions. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The most likely time for strong rip currents to occur is a couple hours either side of low tide, which will occur around 12:25 PM Thursday.
