Special Weather Statement
Issued: 3:31 PM Apr. 19, 2026 – National Weather Service
...INCREASED FIRE DANGER THIS AFTERNOON FOR THE NORTH CAROLINA WESTERN PIEDMONT AND SANDHILLS ... As a cold front moves through the region this morning little if any rain is expected to occur. Humidity values will drop to 15 to 25 percent this afternoon, and northwest winds gusting to 25 to 35 mph, fuels will dry out quickly. This will result in an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires through early evening. Additionally, Monday will be another very dry day with gusty winds, so expect worsening fire weather conditions across all of Central North Carolina. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly. A statewide burn ban is in effect for North Carolina.
