River Flood Warning

AFTERNOON...

* WHAT...Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.

* WHERE...Deep River at Moncure.

* WHEN...From this evening to early Wednesday afternoon.

* IMPACTS...At 9.0 feet, Minor flooding begins.  Flooding is likely
upstream of the gage site along North Plank Road just south of
highway 421 in Lee county, and on R Jordan Road north of highway
421 in Chatham county. At the gage site, flooding reaches the base
of the river gage housing, but is confined to woods and pasture
immediately adjacent to the river.
At 14.0 feet, Moderate flooding begins. Upstream of the gage site,
North Plank Road in Lee county and R Jordan Road in Chatham County
are closed. At the gage site, there is significant flooding of
pasture and woods along the river.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 9:15 PM EDT Sunday the stage was 9.5 feet.
- Forecast...The river is expected to rise to a crest of 12.8
feet by early Monday afternoon. It will then fall below flood
stage early Wednesday morning.
- Flood stage is 9.0 feet.
- Flood History...This crest compares to a previous crest of
11.0 feet on 02/07/2020.

...FLOOD WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL TUESDAY EVENING...

* WHAT...Major flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
This forecast approaches the flood of record from Hurricane Fran
in 1996.

* WHERE...Haw River near Bynum.

* WHEN...Until Tuesday evening.

* IMPACTS...At 11.0 feet, Minor flooding begins.  The river widens
up to 400 feet across. It floods pastureland on the right bank and
woodlands on the left.
At 15.0 feet, Moderate flooding begins. The river widens up to 800
feet across, but flooding remains confined to extensive stretches
of woods and pastureland along the river.
At 17.0 feet, Major flooding begins. Several homes along the right
bank of the river are flooded.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 9:31 PM EDT Sunday the stage was 17.0 feet.
- Forecast...The river is expected to rise to a crest of 21.2
feet tomorrow morning. It will then fall below flood stage
Tuesday morning.
- Flood stage is 11.0 feet.
- Flood History...This crest compares to a previous crest of
21.8 feet on 09/06/1996.

...STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL IMPACT ALAMANCE...PERSON...ORANGE...
DURHAM AND NORTHERN CHATHAM COUNTIES THROUGH 1045 PM EDT...

At 923 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a band of storms extending from near Roxboro to near Chapel Hill.
Movement was curving southwest 15-25 mph. These thunderstorms could
produce weak tornadoes, gusty winds, and heavy rain. Some trees are
expected to easily fall with the ground heavily saturated.

HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
unsecured objects.

Locations impacted include...
Durham, Chapel Hill, Burlington, Graham, Roxboro, Hillsborough, Siler
City, Carrboro, Mebane, and Elon.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms and may lead
to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

Doppler radar has indicated weak rotation with this storm. If the
storm intensifies and rotation strengthens, a warning may need to be
issued.

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.

* WHERE...A portion of central North Carolina, including the
following counties, Alamance and Randolph.

* WHEN...Until 1115 PM EDT.

* IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 856 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain. Minor
flooding is ongoing or may begin shortly in the advisory
area. 1 to 4 inches of rain have fallen from west to east
across Guilford and Randolph counties in the past 6 hours.
- Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Greensboro, High Point, Asheboro, Randleman, North Carolina
Zoo, Thomasville, Kernersville, Seagrove, and McLeansville.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the

* At 811 PM EDT, emergency management reported flooding due to
thunderstorms producing heavy rain in numerous locations across
the warned area, including Pittsboro, Chapel Hill, and Mebane.
Between 2 and 6 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall
amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash
flooding is already occurring.

HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms
producing flash flooding.

SOURCE...Emergency management reported.

IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams,
urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be
possible.

* WHERE...Much of central North Carolina, including the following
counties, Alamance, Anson, Chatham, Cumberland, Davidson, Durham,
Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Harnett, Hoke, Johnston, Lee,
Montgomery, Moore, Orange, Person, Randolph, Richmond, Sampson,
Scotland, Stanly, Wake and Wayne.

* WHEN...Through late tonight.

* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers,
creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.
Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- The remnants of Tropical Depression Chantal will bring
widespread showers and embedded storms across central North
Carolina through early Monday. Storm total rainfall amounts
of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with locally 4 or more inches
possible, with the highest totals likely to be in the
Piedmont and western Sandhills, along and west of US Highway
1. This rainfall may result in flash flooding.
