The following message is transmitted at the request of Flathead Avalanche Center Hungry Horse MT. ...AVALANCHE WATCH ISSUED BY THE FLATHEAD AVALANCHE CENTER... 08:00 MST Tue Dec 16 2025 The Flathead Avalanche Center in Hungry Horse has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WATCH for the following areas: NWS Missoula MT - MTZ001 (MTZ001)...MTZ002 (MTZ002) * WHAT...Strong winds and heavy snowfall may create dangerous avalanche conditions by Wednesday morning. * WHERE...Upper elevations of the Whitefish, Swan Range, Flathead Range and portions of Glacier National Park (Lake McDonald and near Marias Pass). * WHEN...In effect from Tue 08:00 MST to Wed 08:00 MST. * IMPACTS...Strong winds, coupled with heavy precipitation, may result in sensitive hard slabs of wind drifted snow below ridgelines or on the sidewalls of gullies. Large to very large slab avalanches may naturally occur. * PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Very dangerous avalanche conditions may develop. Officials are currently working to mitigate this potential hazard by releasing additional water to take pressure off the diversion structure; these water flows are expected to stay below peak levels during the flood event last Thursday. * WHERE...Libby, MT. * WHEN...Through Wednesday afternoon. * IMPACTS...A failure of the diversion structure may result in flooding of urban areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Recent heavy rain caused damage to the Lower Flower Creek Diversion Structure. Forecast rainfall has the potential to cause additional damage to the structure, bringing the risk for uncontrolled water released into the town of Libby.
