The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued a * Special Marine Warning for... Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas... * Until 745 PM CDT. * At 652 PM CDT, a cluster of severe thunderstorms producing waterspouts was located along a line extending from near Kenner to near Orleans Marina to 8 nm south of Lake Pontchartrain/Lake Maurepas, moving southeast at 5 knots. HAZARD...Waterspouts and wind gusts 34 knots or greater. SOURCE...Radar. IMPACT...Waterspouts can quickly form and capsize boats...damage vessels and oil rigs...and create suddenly higher waves. Small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves. * Locations impacted include... Kenner and Orleans Marina. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Strong winds will be dangerous for boaters or anyone near the water. Boaters should avoid waterspouts and never try to navigate near them. Make sure all on board are wearing life jackets. Seek shelter or move to safe harbor until hazardous weather passes. Frequent lightning is occurring with these storms. If caught on the open water stay below deck if possible, keep away from ungrounded metal objects. A Marine Weather Statement has been issued for the following areas... Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas... At 640 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated a cluster of strong thunderstorms, capable of producing winds to around 30 knots and weak waterspouts. This cluster of thunderstorms is generally located near Kenner, moving southwest at 10 knots. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Mariners can expect widespread gusty winds to around 30 knots, higher waves and dangerous lightning strikes. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until this activity passes. Brief, weak waterspouts are possible with this activity. Remain on alert in case warnings are issued for waterspout development. Intense lightning is occurring with these storms. If caught on the open water stay below deck if possible, keep away from ungrounded metal objects. Report severe weather to the Coast Guard or nearest law enforcement agency.
