...FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 245 PM CDT THIS AFTERNOON FOR EAST CENTRAL COOK AND SOUTHEASTERN DUPAGE COUNTIES... At 1223 PM CDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1 and 3.5 inches of rain have fallen thus far, with heavy rainfall still ongoing in the warned area. Flash flooding is occurring, and reports have been received of totally submerged viaducts and underpasses in the city of Chicago. HAZARD...Significant flash flooding. SOURCE...Radar and automated gauges. IMPACT...Rapid-onset, significant flooding of creeks, streams, drainage ditches, low-lying areas, and poor drainage areas. Widespread street and underpass flooding. Possible flooding of structures. Possible flooding of highways. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Chicago, Downers Grove, Midway Airport, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Bridgeport, South Shore, Burbank, Brookfield, Hinsdale, La Grange, Justice, Summit, Burr Ridge, Ashburn, Brighton Park, New City, Hyde Park, Westmont and Darien. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Flash Flood Warning means rapid-onset flooding is imminent or may already be occurring. Persons along creeks, drainage ditches, and other waterways should take immediate precautions to protect life and property. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. ...FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CDT THIS EVENING... * WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. * WHERE...Portions of northeast Illinois, including the following areas, Central Cook, DuPage, Eastern Will, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Northern Cook, Northern Will, Southern Cook and Southern Will and northwest Indiana, including the following area, Lake IN. * WHEN...Until 6 PM CDT this evening. * IMPACTS...Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Underpasses may be flooded. Roads and streets may be flooded. Extensive street flooding possible. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Slow moving showers and thunderstorms with torrential rainfall will produce locally very heavy rainfall today. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 5 inches or more will be possible on a localized basis.
