...FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 715 AM CDT THIS MORNING FOR NORTHERN AUDUBON, SOUTHERN CALHOUN, CARROLL, SOUTHEASTERN CRAWFORD, GREENE AND NORTHERN GUTHRIE COUNTIES... At 406 AM CDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 2 and 5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts up to 0.5 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Radar and automated gauges. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Carroll, Jefferson, Audubon, Manning, Coon Rapids, Glidden, Lake Panorama, Manilla, Scranton, Bayard, Churdan, Templeton, Bagley, Dedham, Halbur, Yale, Jamaica, Lidderdale and Lanesboro. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. ...FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT... * WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible. * WHERE...Much of central Iowa. * WHEN...Through late tonight. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Area creeks and streams are running high and could flood with more heavy rain. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Moderate to heavy rain is ongoing over much of Iowa and is expected to continue through the morning. Soils are already saturated, with more rainfall on the way. Rainfall totals will range from 2 to 4 inches in a southwest to northeast oriented band across central Iowa, with locally higher amounts likely. Another push of 1 to 2 inches of rainfall is expected across southern and southeastern Iowa through mid- day today. This rainfall may lead to flash flooding. Poor drainage and low lying areas may experience ponding. Significant rises are expected or ongoing on many rivers and streams, which may exceed flood stage. Some larger river basins of most concern include the South Skunk River basin from Ames downstream, the Des Moines River basin Des Moines downstream, the Raccoon River downstream of U.S. Hwy 30, as well as the North, Middle, South, Nishnabotna, Grand and Chariton River basins.
