Rip Current Statement
Issued: 8:12 AM Jun. 16, 2024 – National Weather Service
...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK NOW IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE THURSDAY NIGHT... * WHAT...Dangerous rip currents expected. * WHERE...Walton, Bay, Gulf, and Franklin County Beaches. * WHEN...Through late Thursday night. * IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The buoy located about 90 miles south of Apalachicola early this morning was observing southerly waves of 4 feet at 7 seconds. As these waves move into the surf zone along Emerald Coast and Forgotten Coast beaches today, they will easily support a high risk of rip currents. Then starting Monday, a prolonged period of unseasonably strong easterly breezes will get underway, bringing several days of dangerous rip currents to area beaches. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. &&
