Additional snow accumulations 4 to 10 inches with locally heavier amounts of 12 or more inches above 5000 feet. Lighter snow of 1 to 3 inches expected in Mount Shasta City and Dunsmuir. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph over high and exposed terrain. * WHERE...South central Siskiyou County Including the locations of...Dunsmuir, McCloud, Mount Shasta. This also includes the following passes or notable locations... Black Butte Pass on I-5 at 3900 ft. Snowmans Hill Summit at 4310 ft and Dead Horse Summit at 4489 ft on California Highway 89. Mt. Shasta Ski Park Highway at roughly 5400 ft. Bunny Flat on Everitt Memorial highway at 6900 ft. * WHEN...Until 4 PM PST this afternoon. * IMPACTS...Travel may be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. Wet, slushy roads could turn icy. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING for the following areas: NWS Medford OR - CAZ082 (South Central Siskiyou County). * WHAT...AVALANCHE WARNING. The Forest Service Mount Shasta Avalanche Center has issued an avalanche warning for Mount Shasta area backcountry of Northern California. Heavy snow arrives around 10 PM PST this evening and continues through Friday afternoon. Very dangerous avalanche conditions are likely, especially during peak intensity late Wednesday night through Friday. * WHERE...Avalanche terrain of Mount Shasta, Castle Lake, the Eddy Mountains, and Ash Creek Butte area east of Mount Shasta. Large avalanche run out zones on Mount Shasta, like Avalanche Gulch and the Old Ski Bowl should be avoided until storm snow has time to settle. Both these areas are easily accessed from the Bunny Flat trailhead, where many holiday visitors will enjoy the snow. Know where you are going if traveling in the backcountry. * WHEN...In effect now through 4 PM PST Friday afternoon. * IMPACTS...Up to 3 feet of snow in terrain above 6000 feet late this evening through Friday afternoon. Wind gusts in excess of 60 mph. Expect the lowest snow levels, at around 3500 feet, Thursday night through Friday. * PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Very dangerous avalanche conditions. Travel in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended. Avalanches may run long distances and can run into mature forests, valley floors, or flat terrain.
