Issued: 11:58 AM Jan. 7, 2026 – National Weather Service
...EXTREME COLD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 PM
AKST SATURDAY...

* WHAT...Very cold wind chills as low as -40 to -60. For Pilot Point
and Port Heiden, very cold wind chills as low as -30 to -45.

* WHERE...Lower Kuskokwim Valley, Kuskokwim Delta, Western Capes,
Bristol Bay, and Northern and Central Alaska Peninsula.

* WHEN...From 6 PM this evening to 6 PM AKST Saturday.

* IMPACTS...The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 55 below zero
could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 5 minutes.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Air temperatures will steadily drop through
tonight night, reaching as low as -30 to -40 degrees. Beginning
this evening, sustained winds as high as 20-30 mph will bring
widespread areas of frigid wind chills, with the wind chills to
-55 or lower. Coldest wind chills expected for inland Kuskokwim
Delta and interior Bristol Bay. Confidence is low for when this
cold air outbreak will end, as there is a chance that bitterly
cold conditions could continue through early next week.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

An extreme cold warning means that dangerously low temperatures are
expected for a prolonged period of time. Wear protective clothing
such as a hat, face mask, and heavy gloves or mittens if you have
plans to be outdoors. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of
outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to
drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should
drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from
freezing.
