...LONG DURATION SNOW EVENT POSSIBLE THIS WEEKEND...

A pattern change this weekend will bring the high probability of
another long duration snow event that would give the northern half
of southeast Alaska significant snowfall over several days.

A quick-moving low pressure system will track through the eastern
gulf Wednesday night through Thursday, bringing light snow to the
central and southern areas. Then, a forecasted plume of moisture
will move into the area beginning late Friday, with active
weather lasting into next week. With cold air in place, and no
significant warm up expected between now and this weekend, this
plume of moisture would result in significant snowfall that would
last through the weekend.

Areas of uncertainty include how much moisture will be available
for the snow - greater moisture amounts would result in greater
total snowfall. Also, a surge of warm air from the south could
allow for snow to mix with or possibly change over to rain later
in the weekend, or transition the character of the snow from a dry
snow to a heavy and wet snow, both of which would change final
snow totals as well as snowfall rates.
