...FLOOD WATCH FOR AN ICE JAM NOW IN EFFECT THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING FOR ANIAK AND KALSKAG... * WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam is possible. * WHERE...Aniak and Kalskag * WHEN...Through Saturday evening. * IMPACTS...Ice jams may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, sloughs, and other low-lying flood prone locations. Water may impound behind a jam which may cause flooding several miles upstream. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - For Aniak: As of 9am Friday May 8th, the Riverwatch Team reported that the ice jam on the Kuskokwim River at Aniak started to move downstream and jammed again approximately 16 miles downriver, below Birch Crossing. Additional ice flushed from upstream has now piled onto the tail of that jam, causing water levels at Aniak to rise late Thursday night. Water is overbank near the Aniak Runway, with water over the back road to the barge landing and the gravel pit. Water is also near the AC store and homes on the east/upstream side. Please see the flood warning in effect for Aniak for more information. For Kalskag: As of late afternoon Thursday May 7th, the ice at Kalskag has shifted. Many river-wide cracks, sheet separations, and pressure ridges have formed from upstream of Upper Kalskag to near the islands off Lower Kalskag. Localized break up has occurred near the mouth of the Old River, but it has not yet flushed. - Http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
