...FLOOD WATCH FOR AN ICE JAM REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY
EVENING...

* WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam is possible.

* WHERE...Aniak and Kalskag

* WHEN...Through Friday evening.

* IMPACTS...Ice jams may result in flooding of rivers, creeks,
streams, sloughs, and other low-lying flood prone locations. Water
may impound behind a jam which may cause flooding several miles
upstream.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 530 PM AKDT Thursday May 7th, the Riverwatch Team on the
Kuskokwim River observed that ice is running past Aniak. In
place ice still remains below Aniak, but the Riverwatch team
observed multiple cracks forming in this original ice cover.
The Aniak slough is open and running with ice. Upstream of
Aniak, ice is still coming down, but water levels with these
ice runs are within bank. Flooding is still possible for
Aniak as the ice sheets below town adjust to the running ice.

Now is the time to take precautions. Residents of Aniak
should be prepared for increased flood potential and ice jams
as this moves past the community.
