...SIGNIFICANT WEATHER SYSTEM TO BRING HEAVY SNOW AND RAIN ACROSS THE NORTHERN PANHANDLE... After an extended period of much colder than normal temperatures, a significant weather system will bring heavy snow, with a transition rain across the north central panhandle. Over the weekend, high pressure shifting east and a low moving into the northern gulf will help steer an atmospheric river of deep moisture into southeast Alaska. Heavy snow is expected to begin by late Friday night into early Saturday morning and continue through Saturday evening. Eventually, winds aloft will mix down warmer air to the surface and is expected to result in a changeover to rain from south to north and past the Icy Strait corridor by Sunday morning. Moderate to heavy rain could fall through Sunday before possibly changing back over to snow Monday. Locations further north have a higher likelihood of staying all snow through the duration of the event, including Skagway, Haines and Yakutat. Significant snowfall amounts are possible through the weekend, even before the expected changeover to rain. Additionally, moderate to heavy rainfall on top of the snow could result in excessive runoff that could lead to poor drainage on roadways. Now would be the time to act by clearing snow on the ground around drainage areas and making preparations for snowmelt and rain. Uncertainty remains on specific snowfall amounts and will be highly dependent on temperatures and duration of snowfall, but preliminary snowfall forecast of around 10-12+ inches are possible along the Icy Strait corridor and for the Juneau area, with around 18-24+ inches possible for Haines, Skagway and Yakutat. If areas along the Icy Strait corridor don't changeover over to rain as quickly, snow amounts could be higher. Stay tuned to the forecast over the coming days for updates as this evolving system nears and a the scope and scale of impacts become more clear.
