Severe Warning for Coastal Event
Issued: 2:25 PM Oct. 22, 2025 – EUMETNET - MeteoAlarm
Maritime submersions may cause severe and rapid flooding along the coastline, in harbors, along river mouths and rivers. Waves may damage coastal infrastructures and cause flooding through spray. Waves and maritime submersions, when they occur simultaneously, are particularly destructive. In case of submersion, road and rail traffic routes, houses and economic areas, may be flooded or damaged within a few hours, or even less, even several kilometers from the coastline. Waves may carry objects and materials (especially pebbles) which may become projectiles likely to harm people or to damage goods. Incorrectly secured objects may be washed away. Ships, even anchored on docks in harbors, may be lifted and washed up on land. Stream flow can also be slowed down or stopped, resulting in overflow. Strong gusts of wind, heavy rain and dam failure may increase damage. Injuries and material damage caused by waves and flooding depend on natural factors but also on human activities (land use). It may be reduced thanks to protection measures (dikes, piers, dunes) and prevention (restriction of planning in exposed zones, information, preparation…).
