Yellow Warning - Winter Storm
Issued: 9:18 AM Jan. 12, 2026 – Environment and Climate Change Canada
A significant winter storm continues. Locations: western Newfoundland from Bay St. George to Corner Brook and the Great Northern Peninsula. Total snowfall: 20 to 40 cm, with locally higher amounts possible over higher terrain. Maximum wind gusts (today): east to northeasterly 80 to 100 km/h, with gusts to 120 km/h in areas prone to enhanced easterlies and along the Straits. Maximum wind gusts (tonight): north to northwesterly 90 to 120 km/h. Time span: continuing until early Tuesday morning. Remarks: The combination of snow and strong winds is likely to result in blizzard-like conditions with poor visibility. In the Bay St. George and Corner Brook areas, snow will mix with or change over to ice pellets or freezing rain this morning, delaying the onset of blizzard-like conditions. Visibility is likely to be at its worst tonight, as the strongest winds will coincide with further snowfall and falling temperatures. Local enhancement in easterly flow typically occurs in the vicinities of Cape St. George, Port au Port Bay, the outer Bay of Islands, Trout River Bay, Bonne Bay, Western Brook Pond, St. Paul's Bay, Parson's Pond River, and St. John Bay. ### Travel will likely be challenging. Winter Storm Warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather (such as snow, freezing rain, wind and rain) are expected or occurring. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to NLstorm@ec.gc.ca or post reports on X using #NLwx.
