Yellow Warning - Winter Storm
Issued: 1:31 PM Mar. 12, 2026 – Environment and Climate Change Canada
Heavy snow with freezing precipitation and strong winds are expected. Locations: western, central, and parts of northeastern Newfoundland, as well as the higher terrain along the Burgeo Highway. Total snowfall (today): 15 to 30 cm with locally higher amounts possible. Additional snowfall (Friday): 5 to 10 cm. Freezing rain duration: 3 to 7 hours. Total freezing rain amounts: 5 to 10 mm with up to 20 mm locally. Total rainfall: 5 to 15 mm. Maximum wind gusts: southeasterly 50 km/h, except 80 to 100 km/h along parts of the west coast in locally enhanced downslope flow. Time span: continuing until Friday evening. Remarks: Snow will transition to a mixture of ice pellets and freezing rain later today before changing to periods of rain and drizzle this evening. Precipitation will then transition back to several hours of freezing rain and ice pellets later tonight before finally changing back to snow either Friday morning or afternoon. As temperatures fall on Friday, snow and strengthening winds may combine to cause reduced visibility in blowing snow, especially along the west coast. Local enhancement in southeasterly flow typically occurs in the vicinities of Cape St. George, Port au Port Bay, the outer Bay of Islands, Trout River Bay, Bonne Bay, Western Brook Pond, St. Paul's Bay, and Parson's Pond River. ### Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate. Winter Storm Warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather (such as snow, freezing rain, wind and rain) are expected or occurring. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to NLstorm@ec.gc.ca or post reports on X using #NLwx.
