Special Weather Statement
Issued: 10:49 PM May. 31, 2026 – Environment and Climate Change Canada
Long Duration Moderate to Heavy Rain

What:
Total rainfall amounts of 40 to 80 mm.

Where:
Yoho Park - Kootenay Park, East Kootenay, and Elk Valley.

When:
Now to Tuesday.

Remarks:
A potent Alberta low pressure system continues to bring moderate to heavy rain to southeastern BC tonight and through Monday. The rain is expected to ease on Tuesday.

Snow levels will decrease to as low as 1600 metres over Yoho Park - Kootenay Park region tonight into early Monday morning, so travellers and recreationalists are advised of winter conditions over higher elevations.

Total rainfall amounts will vary greatly across southeastern BC. Highest rainfall amounts near 60 to 80 mm are possible over north- and east-facing slopes as well as communities and highways closest to the Alberta border. Up to 40 mm of rainfall is possible for areas further west.

There is an elevated risk of flooding, landslides and washouts from heavy rain, and rain on snow in the mountains.

Please continue to monitor your local forecast throughout the event. The B.C. River Forecast Centre provides information on current streamflow conditions and flooding alerts. Check DriveBC for road conditions.
