Orange Warning - Winter Storm

Hazardous winter conditions are expected. Locations: the Burin and Avalon Peninsulas. Total snowfall: 35 to 50 cm, with locally higher amounts possible. Total rainfall: 5 to 10 mm (mainly over the southern Avalon and parts of the Southern Shore). Maximum wind gusts Monday: easterly to northeasterly 80 to 100 km/h. Maximum wind gusts Monday night and Tuesday: northerly 80 to 100 km/h. Time span: overnight Sunday night until Tuesday afternoon. Similar storms in the past have caused: - school closures and cancellations of scheduled activities - disruptions to public services - delays or cancellations of ferry and transit services Remarks: As temperatures rise on Monday, snow will become wet and dense, unlike the fluffy nature of recent snowfalls. Over parts of the southernmost reaches of the Avalon Peninsula, snow is expected to mix with or transition to rain Monday morning before changing back to snow Monday night. Visibility may be reduced to near-zero at times as strong winds will accompany heavy snowfall. Snowfall rates may exceed 5 cm per hour at times. ### Winter Storm Warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather (such as snow, freezing rain, wind and rain) are expected or occurring.
