Severe Weather Warning for Damaging Wind
Issued: 6:53 AM Aug. 28, 2025 – Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology
For parts of the Illawarra: Strong westerly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 90 km/h are likely, developing during Friday afternoon.
For parts of the EASTERN RANGES, including the BRINDABELLAS (below 1900 m): Strong west to northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 100 km/h are likely, developing during Friday afternoon.
For the FAR SOUTHWEST: DAMAGING WIND GUSTS around 90 km/h are possible for a brief period in a line of showers as the front moves east across the warning area during Friday morning.
For ALPINE AREAS above 1900 metres: DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h with gusts of around 110 km/h are forecast to develop during Thursday evening, persisting through Friday.
BLIZZARD conditions are forecast for parts of the Snowy Mountains district above 1400 m.
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.
Locations which may be affected include Goulburn, Nowra, Katoomba, Cooma, Wentworth, Braidwood, Jenolan Caves, Taralga, Araluen, Nerriga, Captains Flat, Thredbo Top Station and Mount Ginini.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, rain and showers and northwesterly winds are expected during Thursday and Friday. Areas likely to be affected include the Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts and parts of the Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands and Riverina forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.
