Hurricane Madeline rapidly intensified from Sunday into Monday morning, and it may take a close swipe at parts of the Hawaiian Islands in the days ahead. Madeline's estimated peak surface winds increased from a 50 mph tropical storm Sunday morning, to a 125 mph Category 3 hurricane by Monday evening. A hurricane watch has been issued for Hawaii's Big Island. This means hurricane-force winds are possible within the warning area in the next 48 hours or less.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf
warning... which is in effect from 6 am Tuesday to 6 am HST
Thursday.

* Surf... building to 10 to 15 feet Tuesday afternoon and rising to
10 to 20 feet late Tuesday night and Wednesday.

* Timing... building on Tuesday and Tuesday night and peaking
Wednesday.

* Impacts... high... expect ocean water occasionally sweeping
across portions of beaches... very strong breaking waves and
strong longshore and rip currents. Breaking waves may
occasionally impact harbors making navigating The Harbor channel
dangerous.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Large breaking surf... significant shorebreak... and dangerous
currents make entering the water very hazardous. Anyone entering
the water could face significant injury or death.
