Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 5:23 AM MST Feb. 21, 2017 – National Weather Service

... A Flood Warning for an ice jam remains in effect until 800 am MST
Wednesday for south central Big Horn County...

At 5 am MST, the river gauge on the Big Horn river at basin was at
10.7 feet. Flood stage is 10.5 feet. The Big Horn river at basin
crested at 11.2 feet around 10 PM Monday night. A steady, slow fall
is expected at basin, but the ice jam flooding could worsen
downstream on the Big Horn river including the Greybull area. The
river at Greybull is expected to crest right around flood stage of
92 feet on Wednesday.

Other small streams and creeks across Big Horn County feeding into
the Big Horn river, such as nowood creek, could also be running high
or flooding in some areas.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Greybull,
basin and Manderson.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

River ice is very unpredictable, and may move and jam with little
notice. Any ice jam can cause flooding, as the ice dams the river,
causing rapid increases in river levels in a short period of time.
People living near the Big Horn river should monitor the situation
closely and be ready to move to higher ground if flooding occurs.

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.
