Clipper Targets Northeast With More Snow Tuesday-Wednesday

A clipper will bring another round of quick-hitting snow to the Northeast. Snow will develop across western New York Tuesday morning and then expand east reaching the I-95 corridor near Boston just in time for the Tuesday evening commute. A widespread swath of 1-3 inches looks likely for many, including Boston, with higher totals possible across Upstate New York and the higher elevations. See when the snow could impact your travel here.

New York Breaks Out Hot Tubs To Melt Mountains Of Snow

With temperatures stubbornly remaining below freezing for long stretches, New York City has turned to the Trecan Combustion 60-PD Snowmelter, known on the streets as the “hot tub.” These orange behemoths can melt 120 tons of snow an hour. Javier Lojan, acting sanitation commissioner, told The Weather Channel’s Stephanie Abrams the city has 13 of the machines operating around the city’s five boroughs. Lojan said it may take another couple of weeks before all the piles of snow are cleared.

Farmyard Fiasco On Ice: Chickens And Goose Slip And Slide

Staying upright on an icy path is apparently just as hard for birds as it is for people. Some chickens and a goose couldn’t get a grip as they tried to flap their way across a slippery surface in a village in Guizho Province, China. Their fluttering fiasco is pretty funny.

The Snowmageddon That Broke the Internet

On Feb. 5-6, 2010, the first of two massive snowstorms dumped 32 inches at Dulles Airport – still a record. Days later on Feb. 10, round two hit with another 10-plus inches from Virginia to New York. These twin storms changed weather coverage forever as #Snowmageddon and #Snowpocalypse went viral. People live-tweeted the chaos, marking the moment social media became a real-time weather tool and turning everyday people into storm reporters.

Six-Foot Snowpile On Semi Smashes Stop Light

A semitractor-trailer driver had an unwelcome winter surprise in Michigan. As the semi drove along northbound U.S. 31 in Grand Haven Township, a 6-foot pile of snow on the trailer smashed a traffic light. Deputies with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office stopped the truck. Michigan State Police were also called to the scene and they refused to let the truck leave until the snowpile was cleared.
