Millions will begin to thaw out this week as temperatures rise a good 20-40 degrees above average. Monday will be the warmest day with highs in the 70s reaching as far north as Nebraska. A cold front will knock temperatures down a bit Tuesday and Wednesday, but temperatures will still be well above average. Unfortunately, the Northeast and mid-Atlantic will remain chilly, although temperatures will begin to moderate a bit this week. Watch this video to see how warm it will get in your city.

Even during extended freezing temperatures, ice can be dangerously thin in random areas. Once in water this cold, hypothermia becomes the immediate threat, with the body shutting down in minutes. All three victims were pulled from the water and transported to local hospitals. The rescue highlights the coordinated efforts of New York's emergency response teams and the hidden dangers of walking on frozen bays.

Much of the West has been enduring above-average temperatures and below-average snowfall, which has really impacted the snowpack across the West. Fortunately, that pattern will change, bringing some rain and much needed mountain snowfall to the West. Rainfall of 1-3 inches is possible across the lower elevations and pockets of snowfall across the highest elevations could exceed 5 inches.
