This historic storm is spreading destructive ice and heavy snow over 34 states through Monday including the South, Midwest and Northeast. Here is the very latest forecast.
Winter Storm Fern will bring significant icing and heavy snow to the Deep South starting Friday night and continuing all weekend long. All precipitation types will be possible, as rain will change over to freezing rain, sleet and then eventually snow from north to south. Minor ice accumulations will be possible in Houston, Austin and San Antonio with higher and more damaging ice accretion likely in Dallas, Fort Worth, Shreveport, Greenville and Tupelo. This will be a long-duration event, so tree damage and power outages are likely and travel will become difficult to impossible this weekend, so adjust travel plans and have a winter emergency kit in your car just in case. Winter Storm Fern is here and is set to dump heavy snow and ice across the Northeast. Snow will change to sleet and maybe freezing rain Sunday afternoon along the Interstate 95 corridor from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore up to Philadelphia and even New York City. However, significant snowfall is still expected in these major cities despite the chance of ice. The highest snow totals will likely be across New England in places like Boston, Providence and Hartford. Please stay home and avoid travel today. If you must travel, make sure you have a winter emergency kit in your car. Watch this video for your hour-by-hour forecast and the latest snow and ice totals.
