The tropics: unsettled, but no major threats

By: Dr. Jeff Masters, 2:09 PM GMT on October 07, 2005

Florida
The large area of thunderstorms that broke off from Stan and formed a low pressure system just north of the western tip of Cuba is still there today, pumping plenty of moisture into Florida. This system will continue to bring heavy rains to Florida the next day or two, but is not a threat to develop into a tropical depression. This low pressure system will track northwards along the cold front over the East Coast and move out to sea off the Carolina coast this weekend, and is not expected to add to the 2-5 inches of rain Tammy's remnants are bringing to the Appalachians and New England the next two days.

Atlantic areas to watch
The tropical disturbance we've been following east of the Lesser Antilles Islands is now near 10N 46W. It's convection has diminished considerably today, and is not a threat to develop into a tropical depression over the next two days.

A non-tropical 1011 mb low is northeast of Puerto Rico near 22n56w in the central Atlantic moving west-northwest at 10-15 mph. Tropical development of this this low is not expected for the next two days, but could start to occur after that. The GFS model turns this into a tropical storm by Tuesday that meanders off the East Coast of the U.S., and eventually heads out to sea.

Figure 1. Model tracks for the non-tropical low northeast of Puerto Rico.

Elsewhere in the tropics
Unsettled weather characterize most of the tropical Atlantic, and we need to keep a watchful eye for new suspect areas that may crop up.

Stan
The death toll from Hurricane Stan stands at 250, and will undoubtedly go much higher, as news reports indicate two villages 100 km west of Guatemala City are buried and unreachable. Guatemala suffered the most, with 154 dead, while El Salvador lost 65, Mexico 17, and 14 died in Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica. The remnants of Stan in the Pacific are no longer dumping heavy rain on the area, but the remnants of Stan in the Atlantic near Cuba are still pulling a moist flow of air across Central America, and are expected to bring rains of 1 - 2 inches today over much of the disaster area.

Wunderground member Norman (neavilag) in Guatemala sent me these 24 hour precipitation amounts observed in his country from Stan's rains between 8am Oct 4th and 8am Oct 5th. Up to 10.5 inches (in Spanish, pulgadas) in just 24 hours!

Retalhuleu 266mm (10.5 pulgadas)
Aduana Tecn Uman (Front Mexico) 265mm (10.5 pulgadas)
Pedro de Alvarado (Front El Salvador) 188mm (7.4 pulgadas)
San Jose 134mm (5.23 pulgadas)
Quetzaltenango 131mm (5.22 pulgadas)
Guatemala 70mm (2.75 pulgadas)

Stan's remains near Baja
The remants of Stan are still lurking near the Mexican coast by Puerto Vallarta, and still has the potential to develop into a tropical storm. This system will track northwestward over the next few days and threaten Baja California.

I'll update this by 4pm EDT if there is some significant development. Otherwise the next update will be Saturday around 11 am.

sunshine state not living up to it's rep!
Good morning Palmbeacher
Sun is trying to squeeze out.
Taking my daughter to school this morning was a complete mess. Water up to my ankles and the umbrella did not help. Hoping for a better weekend!
still overcast here...I am really hoping for some sun today. But, with the sun will come heavy rain later.
my boss is crying, the golf course is closed. Now he is stuck with me all day. So we both lose.
I am blessed that I dont usually get hangovers. But then again I learned how to drink early on ie:

1. Pace yourself, don't get into fast drinking contests, funneling or shotguns

2. Don't mix your liquor (ie drink one thing and stick to it)

3. Drink lots of water
Pulgadas? Aren't those small fish? That's a lot of fish to fall in an hour.
well, Jeff makes the tropics sound boring...no other update until tomorrow unless something happens...
Good morning all! Gloomy here in the panhandle. Amazingly, no rain yet.
morning stormy....the tropics do look very boring this morning, just a big bunch of mush!!
morning gb
orion - I would add 4) Don't drink on an empty stomach.
Your #3 is very good advice, being all dehydated the next day is a big part of the hangover. If not water, try some gatorade or the lower calorie Propel/whatever stuff they have nowadays. Also 5) "Pre-Aspirin" (after your meal)

Hangovers made me stop drinking, and even if a take care of myself, I still have an unpleasant "fuzzy headed" feeling the next day. Still sometimes willing to pay the price and have a good time with friends if I don't have to work the next day.
morn 65 and everyone :-)
I just cannot believe all those blobs out there are duds....just doesn't seem right!
I guess we will have to watch and obsess about certain little blobs...or anything else?
I plan to hike out to my local beach Sunday IF it doesn't rain as the weatherguy said this AM....I haven't been out there since Ophelia and I heard there was no beach left....so I wonder what Tammy did to it....hmm...
Right now I am obsessing about my 3 day weekend coming up!!!!
65 Id love to have a 3 day weekend...lucky you...its columbus day and bday for me :-)
rxse7en - You're cracking me up today. It's all cubits to me.
Seriously, "Pulgadas", I guess it is in Spanish, but I do not know what it corresponds to in English. Anyone?
Mornin' All!

Like you it's pretty blah by me although if I move my head to the left I almost see a tiny tiny bit of sun trying to peek out behind a gray cloud.
guygee,

Knew their was one I was forgetting.. I rarely get beyond slightly buzzed these days..
Well happy early birthday stormy!!
weatherdude65,

What are you going to do on your 3 day weekend?
stormydee,

Happy early bday - here is your cyberspacial cake with candles and everything
Happy Birthday to you...
Orion,
My technique for overindulding was to set the alarm early the next morning (whether or not I had to get up), take some Advil and drink a glass of juice and some water.

Hydration and establishing a glucose balance are both pretty important.

Here's my wild prediction (based on very little expertise):
The Bahamas and Yucastan will continue their diurnal flares, but won't develop. The 22N system to the east will keep trying to mix circulation down to the surface, but that'll take a day or two at least.

The interesting spot I think may be just N of the S.A. coast, where vapor appears to be moving up into an area of light surface winds, minimal shear, and a nearby upper-level anticyclone a little to the north. Warm water, low winds, and what appears to me to be a favorable zone for convection. What am I missing?
Zap
guygee...I checked and Pulgada in english is inch
orion....nothing special Saturday or Sunday...doing stuff with the wife and kids. Monday plan on getting some things done in the yard...as long as it is dry
well, thanks everyone..wish boss would give me the day off, though :-)
Happy B-day Stormy!
Wouldn't it be nice if I got the day off for your birthday!
ohhh well the area that was convecting yesterday east of the lesser antilles lost much of its flare up would this sistem gain convection again and if so would this sistem be any threat to the caribbean.
stormy,I'll enjoy the day for you since I am off :-)

My sons birthday is the 14th and he does not have school (teacher inservice) he is pretty excited about that
gbreezegirl,
It has rained on and off this morning in FWB...not sure if it is coming your way or not. Been gone all week and was hoping for some sun this weekend to get in some beach time. Doesn't look like it though. Good thing though, not having to worry about a storm coming in on us for the first time in a while!
Mornin all! ~ Stormydee, watch for trash when ya head to the beach. As Tammy was forming & passing I checked out Melb. Beach & saw Indiatlantic on the news (where that old lady washed up), both were covered in everything plastic with some dark brown oily stuff being left from the foam. Waves were huge. I had to check it out after a friend had been down there & reported "the ocean was cleanin itself". She's a long time sea lover, had seen this happen in the past, but never to this extent. Asked me if it was NO. Does the gulf stream flow that way? Tammy push it from the gulf steam to our beach? Hope it got picked up. Let us know & happy beach goin!
that system has a long way to go before it can be anything, it us undergoing some shear right now
!!!

(ASCII birthday cake) Happy Bithday!
Oops, birthday cake must have been dropped, happy birthday anyways!
Skypony.

When rita went past south of me I went to the beach to check it out. There was a line of junk high on the beach. Lots of garbage, toys, shoes, wood, and other oddball things along with a lot of seaweed.
Hi code 1: Everything is just so unpredictable around here. I cannot believe how dark and gloomy it is this morning and yet not a drop yet. Maybe we can wish it away. My sinuses tell me that is not the case though.
stormydee,
have a good one! enjoy reading your posts.
Skyepony - Hard to believe she went wandering into that surf.
Maybe a freak wave come up and snatched her?
gbreezegirl, mine too, plus ol' arthur is hitting my knees for the first time this year!
well then ill be quiet here enjoying my weekend here in my place not worrying about anything here and just relax thats a word that i havent use in weeks
Good morning to all - gloom here!
Hi Code1. You back in Pensacola yet?
Guygee ~ who knows ~ rip current, a 2x4. Ya know my friend had to jump in for a quick dip too that day. Can't say much~ I've body surfed & kayaked 12' +, with a PFD of course.

Lets check the models~ UKMET Link
Hello Everyone! HAPPY B-DAY STORMY!!! =)
Did anyone notice that there are now 3 investigative areas on skeeter?Link

GFS Link

That's all I can do now the little one has returned from the grocery with blood on the dress (from dad) off to my other expertize stain removal
coconut, I personally, don't think that we are going to have to worry about any of those. ( I am wishing them away.)
Well, I feel birthday blessed, thank you everyone..I am gaining cyber calories from all the cakes I received. :-)
Wishing is probably more effective than my method of standing on the beach and blowing east :)
Hi CCFLA, actually it is Ft. Walton. Got home last night. Going back to Miami on Sun. Had some interesting weather down there didn't we, hit and miss everywhere, even though the whole area was supposed to get a lot. I was downtown and didn't have any problems other than a few storms which is typical. We'll see what next week brings :)
palmbeacher - please enjoy a day off for me I wont mind. :-)
Same for the rest of you lucky folks that get Monday off...
Skyepony - "with some dark brown oily stuff being left from the foam".

Lovely how all of the ships coming into Port Canaveral feel free to dump their bilge along our coast. I sure wish EPA/Coast Guard would get together and really crack down on those polluters, but I am not holding my breath. Bad for business, you know, too much gummint regulation.

Another case where local government just doesn't have the resources, it would take the feds with their resources to crack down and enforce the law.
I'm looking forward to Nov Dec when we get our first cold front down here...by cold front I mean actually dropping the temps, not just wind direction.
Coconut, u do that too? It worked for Ophelia :-)
65, Im easily chilled, so no rush for cold weather on my half. :-)
stormy...not cold, cold, just get the temps down in to the mid to upper 70's
I don't get Monday off! =(
Good Morning all,

You all seem to know each other - so I guess I'll just have to get used to being the new kid on the block.

As my handle suggests, I live in the Cayman Islands and it sure is gloomy here - although I am quite happy for nothing to be going on in the tropics. Don't ever want to see another Ivan
ccfla and stormy, said it before and will say it again...i think if we ALL congregate on the side of the state to be hit and do a collective "blow" it will keep us safe lol.
I don't get Monday off either. But, I do get Thursday off! My boss is Jewish, so I also get to reap the benefits.
21..I'm off!! I work at a credit union
HI Cayman, welcome!
Palmbeacher, my wife works for Keiser College and she gets the Jewish holidays off as well.
Welcome Cayman!
hi cayman and welcome. we've all been new. lurked for a long time before posting. still don't understand all the technical points and keep quiet during imminent weather, otherwise get comments in to "friends" as everyone seems to have become. it definitely broadens horizons for me!
Hi Cayman! You live on GC? me on the Brac
Happy b-day stormy, wish i could send you some sun. there is not a cloud in the sky today.
Yep, during the day it is more laid back and friendly and at night the local experts come on so we tend to hang back and learn from them.
Skyepony - Thanks for the links. Both sort of "stream" the moisture up the East Coast without bombing out until well into the North Atlantic. Also forecasting next system more north of Bahamas.

Well, when the wind turns offshore should still be a decent swell component, good for surfers and boogie boarders, if we can dodge the debris.

Sun breaking out here for first time, think I'll get to some little house repairs still left over from last year...
sorry Cayman..... you don't have to answer that.... probably seemed a little intrusive :)
Hello Cayman, glad to see ya! I know what you mean about Ivan, we had him too..
Finally starting to sprinkle here in Gulf Breeze. I don't have Monday off either =(. Thankfully, school is not out as originally planned.
I am just happy it is FRIDAY!!!!
(Before I go) Hi CaymanGal! Nice to see a new blogger, and since you are so strategically located, I hope you continue to check in here now and again. Here's for wishing the sun breaks out for you today!
FRIDAY!!! FRIDAY!!! FRIDAY!!!
Wooo hooooooo!!!
I'm with you Pensacola........... I need a friday! and weekend to go with it!
hi caymangal! glad to see we gals moving up in #s here!!!
::VBG:: watchit guys!!! WOOHOO!!!

Happy Birthday Girlfriend!!! Enjoy the cyber calories, they're the best kind!!! ::wink::
hey p21, just looked at your photos, hope you are back up and running now! gbreeze, have a pretty good rain right now. there goes my day with a good book, and some cold one's at the beach today :( worked 40 hours in 3 1/2 days this week and was looking forward to some down time. price we pay for living here. i know most don't understand how we feel that way, but, they don't live here the rest of the time to understand that it really is paradise!
Kennedy Space Center does all the blowing east for me...with Ophelia, you could tell when they were breathing in cause she came right up to our coast....LOL :-)
dang, baro pressure is 29.70 and headed down. when do my sinuses get a break already?
Yeah Code- I couldn't leave this place, ever!

CGables - LOL We are taking over haha!!
Good day all... hope everyone is well..looks bad outside, but no rain...
Weatherdude.. amen, can't wait for temps to get into the 70's .... open windows, shut off AC..... ahhh :)
Hi billsfan, clearing up here. Don't send it up my way, Please.
We are Women hear us (((((ROAR))))) LOL
Code - The shop guys were working a few days after Ivan (with the shop like that)! We have recovered and are rebuilding.. =)
well, going to grab some grub and pay some bills...not sure if I'll be back today...boss DID change the hours to where we get out at 12PM edt on Fridays. YIPPEE!!! So, have a great weekend and we'll catch up next Monday with those of us who will be working.
Bye! :-)
Raining hard here again..... thought we might get a break! Have a good day all! Bye
I think that I am greatly outnumbered this morning!!! LOL
Bye stormy...have a great weekend! :-)
Our pressure here in the panhandle is 29.71 and dropping and my sinuses feel it too! Now it is drizzling and dreary. Blah blah. Doesn't really motivate me to do my workout on lunch break, but at least now I have an excuse not to go for my walk. LOL.
Its ok weatherdude, its nice to have a guy around. We need someone to pick on. Just kidding...
dude65........ and loving every moment!!! ::snicker:: am off to earn some pennies!!! Later!!
gb, I don't have any excuses for not walking...I have a treadmill at home.
21 - interested in photos. Location?

Hurricanecrab - Grand Cayman - raining like crazy at the moment. No beach this weekend :( NO worries though, I'll just go diving. If you can't beat the wet, join it!

Happy Friday everyone!
I am off to the gym. Be back in an hour. (ya'll had to remind me about the treadmill didn't ya) LOL.
palmbeacher...that is the same thing they tell me here at work. lol

cg...yes I am :-)
weatherdude, you said earlier you had kids how many? 2 for me boy and a girl. They are great!
see ya later gb
109. code1
ya know we will get burned from some for this chat though. thanks dude65, being a male doesn't mean you can't chat! think i will call and see if i can get my std. poodle pup groomed today as i can't do anything i had planned. maybe even get in some shopping while she is being beautified, lol have a good weekend everyone. i'll check in from time to time to see if anything pops up.
palmbeacher...2 for me as well, boy and girl. My son will be 13 on the 14th and my daughter is 8. They are GREAT kids!!!!
have a good weekend code1
My son is 9 and my girl is 5. They are especially great kids when they spend the weekends with their dad! LOL No, I don't know what to do with myself when they are gone.
Have a good weekend Code1!

one 4-year old daughter for me.
Good morning Ladies and Dude65! I'm off on Monday (one of my regular days off anyway) but I getting a Root Canal done that morning!!! Hope I get some good drugs (pain killers) to take home!! Happy Birthday to you...

Since I work (Alt Wed, Thur - Sat) today's not even a "Friday" for me!

Still off and on rain here in West Broward, nothing bad.
I bet it is quiet when they are not there....probably too quiet
gbreezegirl ,

My sinuses are screwed as well its dropped 24 degrees in about 15 hours around here (ie welcome to Webster, Ny if you don't like the weather wait 5 mintues). As far as the rain its coming we got a big upwelling of rain from the south and another bunch coming from the west
Gamma, Good luck with that root canal. I had wisdom teeth cut out last week and the drugs were not good enough. The best thing is Advil Liquid gel caps. They are great take 4 at a time. Works for arthitis as well
weatherdude, the first day is great, I catch up on a bunch of things, after that I have nothing to do. Go out, but that tends to get old.
weatherdude65,

Yea up here I having a feeling Jack Frost is going to be showing up in combat boots to kill this warm weather's butt.. ie its going to be a above average winter in Upstate NY (read as higher snowfalls, more blizzards and colder temps)
Pensacola21,

Same here but if I don't find a job by the end of the month I have tons of vacation time (non-paid) of course
Palmbeacher, I'm sure that it does. I am taking advantage of not having anyone home Monday to get some things done.
122. code1
palmbeacher, thanks for the advil update. will get some today while shopping. banged my knees up a lot as a kid running barrels on horses and paying for it know. usually use motrin, helps some, but will try your remedy. i hear ya gbreeze!
orion, I lived in northern Maine for 41/2 years, so I know about those nasty winters!!
Code1,

I am Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (sorry couldn't resist)

Welcome to the weatherhood (LOL)
code1, I have had a couple of knee surgeries from playing basketball in HS. I think the advil works better than celebrex. I quit taking that after I found out this worked so well.
Enjoy your peace and quiet weatherdude. It will fly on by....
palmbeacher,

We are MEN hear us ROAR ((BURP!!!!!!)

(LOL)
Orion, you forgot to scratch! LOL
I just got a call from my wife. She is down in Ft Lauderdale today for a conference with all of the instructors, and all the higher ups with Keiser College..ie, Mr Keiser himself and all of the VPs and everyone else. Each year they give out awards to the top 5 instructors..there are over 300, and she was selected as the 3rd best. This is really impressive because she has only been teaching since Jan. I am so proud of her!!!!
palmbeacher,

Morphine, Morphine he's our man, if he can't kill the pain no one can.. I had double pnuemoania a few years back and they gave me Morphine with a one hour joy buzzer (ie it would release morphine in the IV only once a hour).. it would be:

release to 20 mintues - Whoa its mr. hand (well 3 of them)
21 - 40 mintues - I am feeling good
41 - 60 mintues - OH god please let me die.. I can't take the pain hurry up you bleeping clock
Advil Gel Caps is all Hubby and I keep; better than other pain relivers!

Cold Fronts: I don't really like them on S Fl; me and my garden gets cold easy. I bundle up when it gets aroun 70!
I am hoping to turn off the AC soon and open windows; that is nice weather!

No kids at home: Takes some getting use too; especially when they were young. STay busy, rest or get things done makes the time go by faster. However, my husband and I have LOVE our "empty nest" for the past several years. Kids all grown (30, 28, 26) two are married with delightful grand children (boy 2 1/2, baby girl 3 mos).
Grandkids makes raising your children worth it all!!!
What am I doing wrong here? I'd appreciate some advice. When i enter this blog, it becomes stationary...that is, the last post on the page STAYS the last post. Forever. Unless i leave and return, and then, depending on how busy it is in here, there are 5 or 104 more entries. So what have I got wrong here?
weatherdude, Thats AWESOME!! Now, you need to take her out for a nice dinner celebration
weatherdude65,

I can imagine, never been to Maine. Want to one day
just noticed, grammer and spelling terrible, will proof read in the future before hitting send!
palmbeacher,

Tisk Tisk no polite to do in public, not to mention I seen women scatch as well.. actually caught this one girl with her pants halfway down adjusting her g-string once..
You have to refresh the page. It's a pain but the only solution.
orion...beautiful country in the summer, can be very brutal in the winter. I loved it though!
140. code1
oriondarkwood, duly impressed! hey navarre, gbreeze and p21, wear 3 on now and says our weekend will be good. maybe not a total washout. see you at the beach!!goodbye all for now.
gamma, I wish someone would have told me about them sooner. And as far as grandkids, my mom says she enjoys my kids more than she ever enjoyed me and my brother, then she said "dont take that the wrong way"
65: that's great about your wife. Do tell her that all the weatherhood women (and a couple token males) are quite impressed!
It rained 2.35" yesterday in Gainesville. It has been more overcast than rainy here today. From what the local weather reports are saying, the rainy weather should clear out of here by Sunday to give us nice weather for the back half of the weekend. It looks like no direct threat to FL until after the weekend.
The award that they give to all five is a trip for two. Last year it was to Key West, year before Las Vegas and the year before that the Bahamas
to continue with the models~ I present the canadian Link

Weatherdude ~SCCU?

Guygee~ if the rain quits this weekend we should be reroofin the other 1/2 of the barn, more repairs from Jeanne to go
I just hope the trip isn't during hurricane season!
coconut....that is what I have become, one of the token males... LOL
Code1,

Have fun, and sorry but I am bad for quoting movie/TV lines..
weatherdude, if its at a time you can't go, I will take the trip for you. Its the least I can do.
fflattiger

I rarely post because it is usually busy and I get ignored. Enjoy reading to see what is going on when I get a chance. However, every now and then someone will acknowledge and answer a question. Today's bunch seems to be very friendly and well mannered!

Also, a few days ago I took and chance and posted and was the last post for several hours (I checked after 2 meetings and still the last blog) then I realized they had an update from Dr Masters and the new blog had started.
Welcome aboard.
Howdy fellow weathernerds... 1st posting here (tho I've been lurking here for a couple of months). Some great posters here! For the past month i've been praying for rain here (near philly). Sept was extremely dry, 0.21" I believe. Now we have a flood watch with a possibility of 8" of rain over the next 4 days from reminants of Tammy and her spawn. Probably shoulda specified "1-2" of rain rather than simply "alot of rain". But I'm new to faith-based" meteorology LOL.
J. Bastardi is talking about a tropical system impacting the NE US next week. Anyone else heard about this or have theories?
Refresh page? ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGH....I feel REAL dumb right now....is bein 58 yr old (since last week) a good enough excuse for not knowing? And ..Thanks Coconut!
Weatherdude - that is awesome! =) Congrats to the wife!
coconut....it is in the middle of January

skye..no, CECU
dont worry fflatt, we have all been there. (atleast i have and I am only 29)
thank you palmbeacher, that is very nice of you. I will keep you in mind. :-)
Going to try to get a little work done now.

be back later.
we are not going to discuss age....well, ok. I will hit the big 40 in December.
LOL
bye for now coconut
BYE COCO
Thanks for keeping me in mind weatherdude, Like I said its the least I could do. Wouldn't want that trip to go to waste.
I remember when I used to think 40 was old but now that I'm just 3 years away I think its pretty young!!!!!!!!!!!
njsammy...he is probably talking about the ULL that is in the atlantic. Some of models develope it in the next few days, move a bit to the west and then to the N and NE
UM.....thanks everyone. I am stsrting to feel better, and the refresh page thing works well......and a few patches of blue sky visible here...I'd say my day was improving.
got to go to another meeting, will catch up in a couple of hours...got work to do ....

Is any of those swirls out there going to develope in the next few days?

Can I put my outdoor and patio furniture back out and set up where it belong?

catch you all later! (by the way, i'm 52 and still learning everyday about all this computer stuff!)
Age is only a number any way. I can honestly say that I do not feel anywhere near 40. My two kids really keep me going, and I stay active in playing basketball and soccer any chance I can get.
I agree, age is only a number! And I don't act my age.
weatherdude if your kids are like mine, you don't have time to even think about being old! Football, baseball, and gymnastics. I feel like a taxi driver most of the time.
looks like more rain heading my way from the south :-(
it is hard to act your age when you have to get down on the floor and roll around with your 3 year old
65...yeah I believe he's referring to the ULL, which he thinks will gradually morph from cold-core to warm-core over the course of the next 3 or 4 days.

As for age, I'm 52...and truthfully, each year gets better.
palmbeacher..I NEVER try to act my age...it's no fun if you do. lol
yeah, i just went outside, and its coming. Yippeee more rain!
anyone read Bastardi's column today?.. interesting take on Yucastan... near Cuba.. he says two named storms by Monday or so...
sky in getting dark here once again more rain comming in (melbourne)

Yep kids do keep you young I have 3 boys age 8,10,12 and right now they keep me young but when they get a little older(teens)they probally will make me old. LOL
Well never had kids...could never seem to stay married long enough......but I've had dogs all my life and trying to keep up to them kept me young (sorta) the times it didn't near kill me. This computer thing? 5 years ago I didn't have one. I figured I could addd and subtract (even do square roots) , could read a phone book and a dictionary, had a Library card.....no need to be fussing with a computer. Then my baby sis lived with me for 3 months and suddenly I had a computer and was learning to type....am up to 2 fingers now :)
Yeah fflatt. You are doing great
Wow, I have some work to do finally. Be back later.
see ya later palmbeacher! :-)
well i think since i'm the only one with beautiful weather, i am going to go out and enjoy it enough for everyone.

wow surfer 3 boys, i have one and i can hardly keep it together.

Bye
Well there have been some discoveries. This place (Weather Underground) and the blogs rank way up there. I am not a meteoroligist, but I do have to live in (and with) the weather and this is such a huge improvement over local TV/Radio. Seem they update at noon every day. Only at noon. But not every day.
Link This is an old loop but you can see the low moving off toward the ene, a few showers with it. It will be interesting to see what it does when it gets to the atlantic
ok..my turn to head out for a bit. aka get some more work done. I'll check back in later this afternoon.
FFlatt... where are you?

Weatherdude... our (Ft Laud) local weather says the low by Cuba will be in the Panhandle tomorrow... what do you think? I don't see it, at least yet..
I notice that a lot of us are from FLorida. Maybe after hurricane season we should have a wunderground.com reunion somewhere. Maybe at one of the theme parks in Orlando or Tampa.
I got some awesome photos from a friend via e-mail of katrina coming ashore. I dont have a clue how to post them here. If someone knows, I can forward to them and they can post.
Jim
Hello all, raining, dreary where I work in Martin County, nasty day. Martin County's emergency helicopter is flying around in the area, why I ask, the hospital is right here! Heard they were crazy, but this is nuts, who's going to fly them to the hospital when they crash??!!
Hi all!

Like others, been lurking around for a couple of months now - finally decided to post while things are quiet :)

Hailing from Charleston, SC! Tammy still raining on us so we are still VERY wet here, and local weather calling for it to slow down and eventually stop sometime after the weekend :(

It did pause long anough last night for the hubby to get the grass cut, but the rain started falling again by the bucketfuls about the time he came inside. Looked like a waterfall pouring off the back door awning!

But that is nothing compared to casualties from Tammy down at Edisto Beach near here! The beach erosion was so significant (3 feet of sand lost over the last two days) that several houses collapsed into the ocean. The local fire department was on site to order residents of other houses at risk to evacuate, and the local news people stood by with live cameras watching these homes go one by one. It was sad to see. Last week these folks had a yard with grass and all leading to the ocean, and a week later their houses are precariously hanging OVER the ocean, if not in it!

Just proves it doesn't take much of a storm to do significant damage ...

Anyway, I have enjoyed the posts. I've been a storm junkie since high school (back in the late seventies!) My mom was too before she passed away. She would have LOVED this :)
Its Friday and all the lurkers have can out to play..

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MIAMI FL
200 PM EDT FRI OCT 7 2005

.DISCUSSION...UPPER LOW OVER THE NORTHEAST GULF OF MEXICO NOT MOVING
MUCH. IT WAS EXPECTED TO BE PICKED UP BY THE SHORT WAVE THAT IS
MOVING THROUGH THE UPPER MIDWEST THIS MORNING. HOWEVER THIS WAVE IS
NOT THAT STRONG SO THE UPPER LOW PROBABLY WILL NOT MOVE AS FAR
NORTHEAST AS EARLIER EXPECTED. THE FOLLOWING WAVE OVER THE
NORTHWEST U.S. SHOULD BE ABLE TO EJECT OUR UPPER LOW TO THE
NORTHEAST. SO BY SUNDAY WE SHOULD SHIFT FROM THIS SOUTHERLY FLOW TO
A SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW AND THUS BE ABLE TO BRING IN THE DRIER AIR THAT
IS OVER THE GULF OF MEXICO. THE SURFACE LOW SOUTH OF MOBILE SHOULD
FOLLOW THE UPPER LOW AND SHOULD MOVE EASTWARD AND CROSS NORTHERN
FLORIDA ON SATURDAY. THIS LOW COULD BRING SOME OF THE DRIER AIR OVER
THE GULF OF MEXICO INTO OUR NORTHERN ZONES LATE TOMORROW. IT COULD
ALSO KEEP OUR LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE UP FOR THE AFTERNOON ESPECIALLY
IN THE EAST SO WILL KEEP THE PROBABILITIES ON THE HIGH SIDE FOR
SATURDAY. THE COLD FRONT OVER THE SOUTHERN U.S. HAS ALREADY STARTED
TO SLOW AND WITH THE EXPECTED REBUILDING OF THE UPPER RIDGE OVER THE
GULF OF MEXICO AND SOUTHEASTERN U.S. EARLY NEXT WEEK DO NOT EXPECT
TO SEE IT MAKE IT MUCH FURTHER SOUTH THAN NORTHERN FLORIDA. BY
SUNDAY WITH THE UPPER LOW MOVING NORTHEAST THE LOW/TROUGH THAT IS
OVER US AND THE EASTERN GULF OF MEXICO TODAY SHOULD HAVE MOVED EAST
OF THE PENINSULA. THIS SHOULD MOVE MOST OF THE CONVECTION INTO THE
ATLANTIC WITH IT AND BY SUNDAY THE DRIER AIR SHOULD MOVE INTO OUR
ZONES. THROUGH THE EARLY PART OF NEXT WEEK WE SHOULD BE IN A WEAK
PRESSURE PATTERN WITH THE SURFACE TROUGH TO OUR EAST AND THE SURFACE
HIGH STILL OVER THE SOUTHEAST U.S. THEN AS THE UPPER RIDGE REBUILDS
THE SURFACE RIDGE SHOULD BUILD SOUTHWARD AND PUT US BACK IN A LOW
LEVEL EASTERLY FLOW. THIS WILL RETURN THE LOW LEVEL MOISTURE AND
PUT US INTO A NIGHT/MORNING EAST COAST SHOWER REGIME.

&&

.MARINE...BUOY 42003 IS BACK AND THIS HELPS TO BETTER DEFINE THE
EXTENT OF OUR SURFACE TROUGH. UNTIL THE TROUGH LINE MOVES EAST OF
THE PENINSULA WE SHOULD STILL SEE RELATIVELY STRONG SOUTHERLY WINDS.
SATURDAY WILL BE THE TRANSITION DAY AND BY SUNDAY THE WIND..SEAS AND
WEATHER SHOULD BE GOOD FOR BOATING. THIS IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE
THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK.
West Palm Beach:
Heat Index: 92 F
Humidity: 89%
Dew Point: 79 F
Wind: 12 mph from the SSE
Pressure: 29.68 in
Visibility: 10.0 miles

Temp is 82 hard to believe it is still this hot!
never been to sawgrass, can you believe that?
cgables, I have only been twice, and it is not one of my favorite places to go. Too many people. So, I usually stop in at the Rain Forrest Cafe (great food by the way) and have a drink.
MIAMI

Light Rain Mist

look at that humidity and weep... I don;t think it's gone below 90% almost all week... like breathing thru a wet towel...
Palmbeacher wants me to post some more off topic questions.. do I here any more votes??
off-topic or off-color??? ::leering::
cgableshurrycanegal ,

Yea white rabbit has done a pretty good job
I say 1 vote is enough orion.
Cgables, If they could I believe the humidity level would be raised to 120% that might do it justice.
cgableshurrycanegal,

Off topic, don't want the doctor getting ticked at me. If you want off color you have to email me (EG)
ROFL!!! On that happy note, gotta get back to work in my other guise!!! CU!!!
dcw - not me either

yes vote for orion's off topic, but wait, have to get my scorecard out, I'm still learning:)
Bye Cgables. I gotta run too! Getting out early today!
if Orion posts his questions I'll hang around a few minutes.
Hi, I'm back. What's going on. You guys aren't going off topic are you? :)
errnsfl, still raining up your way?
Bigger question: Exactly what is the topic?
Okay back by UNPOPULAR demand more off topic questions

1. Which would you rather time travel in:

* The Phone Booth from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

2. If you could be a mytical beast what would you be?

3. If you could be a mythological god/hero which would you be?
back a few minutes between meeting.

Nasty downpour of heavy rain in West Broward (work in Weston) for past 30 mins (of course while I was out trying to get some lunch)

Orion, you are funny. you get a yes from me but I have to go again. will see what you wrote later.

Gamma

Thanks Orion, Now I have to think about these. HMMM
Hi everybody! I'm back from lunch (workout). I actually got to take my walk and it was really nice. Breezy with white caps on the Bay. Felt great!
Oh my God, what is that? (Oh it's just the sun peeping out)! LOL.
Delorean - I'm an 80s girl
Unicorn - why not.
Aphrodite - I'm just feelin the love today
Hey, Nava: you stole my answers!!
My answers

1. Which would you rather time travel in:
* The Delorean from Back to the Future
* The Chron-a-John from Day of the Tencatle
* The Phone Booth from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Delorean - easier to pick up dates in a cool car..

2. If you could be a mytical beast what would you be?

Dragon

3. If you could be a mythological god/hero which would you be?

Loki or Eros
1. the phone booth, Keanu Reeves heck yeah
2. Sea Creature. (with all the rain I need to be a good swimmer)
3.goddess Hera (she is the only one I could think of)
Any Zeus' out there?

answer to questions:

1. The delorean Back to the Future
2. the phoenix rising up from the ashes
3. hercules, so I can royally make the gods mad, and be able to fight my way through trials, heck, maybe stop a Titan in the guise of a hurricane. :)
Keanu Reeves - Good point palm beacher. Can we get a guarantee that Keanu comes with the phone booth?
What kind of car does Brad Pitt drive?
Navarregal, I hope he is in there. Thats what I was counting on!
Hi All:

I'm always up for Orion's questions. :-)

1. Which would you rather time travel in:

Delorean- definitely.

2. If you could be a mytical beast what would you be?

A Liger- (Pretty Much Napoleon Dynamite's favorite animal)

3. If you could be a mythological god/hero which would you be?

Andromeda (does she count?)
Orion, Wonderful questions Round of Applause
clap, clap, clap....
Alright all, It has been fun. Everyone have a Great Weekend. I am getting outta here! Everyone stay dry and Keep Safe. TTFN
Mandy,

Liger's actually exist so by defination not a mythological creature

And by Andromeda I assume you mean ("ruler of men") was the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia, king and queen of the Ethiopians. After she died was placed as a contellsation by the gods right?
Ligers exist?!? Wow, learn something new everyday. Well, then I pick Kracken from Clash of the Titans (same place I got Andromeda from)

Do those answers count? :-)
CoconutCreekFLA,

No clue, probably something more than we can ever afford
Mandy,

Yes google search the term.. And krakens work (I play AD&D and the game I run, the party had to fight a kraken a couple of weeks ago)
Sweet. You don't hear a lot about Kraken's these days.
Mandy,

No, but giant squids (which you could say they are kraken since that is probably where the myth started with) have been in the new in recent history.

http://tinyurl.com/cc2lv
pouring here in Eastern Broward.. of course, like
Gamma I was out going to the bank, post office and lunch!
bye Palmbeacher..
I did hear about the squid!

Which begs the question...

Would you rather fight a giant squid or a 13 foot Burmese Python?
is there a wunderground winter weather blog / message board? Winter is a couple of months away but I want to be prepared. J. Bastardi has been subtly hinting (subtle as in freight train) that the ne & mid-atlantic US is gonna be in for a cold, snowy winter...YAY. His winter forecast is out next week.
Hello All, I'm back... I was actually working (patting myself on the back ) =)
palmbeacher - I don't believe it, the sun is out, surrounded by ominous black clouds, but it's there!
njsammy,

Its going to be the focus of my blog on here once winter gets kicking in the area..
before i answer your question mandy...do squids eat anything that causes them to explode?
Mandy,

Python for many reasons

1. Fighting it on land
2. One head or one attack
3. Python can only constrict, gaint squids have suckers and hooks that can rip
4. Python eat thier prey whole so even if it could swallow me I could still have a fighting chance

etc.. etcc..
MY BLOG IS UPDATE TAKE A LOOK
njsammy,

No, but they can explode due to rapid deconpression. i.e. why some fish "puke" and/or swell up when deep sea fishing (know from first hand experience)
nj- I don't think so... haven't had much experience with them.
But sometimes you aren't fighting a python on land... Take the 6 foot alligator for example...
Yea! My 2pm meeting cancelled. Now got a lot of research to do but, will do it later.

Like most of you, only learned about this blog earlier this summer and only looked for months before I put on my first timid post. However, been looking at WU since 1999. Used it through Hurricane Season to see what was going on, just the main part; never clicked on any of the side stuff.

My big question because I have never even looked at this web site from Mid Nov - June, does it exist after Hurricane Season? If so, what on earth does it post since it is a "tropical weather" site?

Maybe I will make a note in my Franklin (yes, I still use the paper version instead of electronic...) to look it up and see what is on here in Dec or Jan...but if anyone can tell me if Dr Masters keep it up all year round, it would be appreciated. Thanks, Gamma
thanks orion. i'll be looking forward to your winter weather blog. seeing those pics of your house in winter has whet my appetite for skiing (tho last time i went i broke my thumb - lesson learned: when your legs stop listening to your commands to turn...it's time to call it a day)
A 1012 MB LOW IS CENTERED ABOUT 425 NM NE OF THE NORTHERN

COLLOCATED WITH AN UPPER LEVEL LOW CENTERED NEAR 22N54W AND IS

INCREASED NEAR THE SURFACE LOW OVER THE PAST 24 HRS AND IF THIS

models want to take this system towards the us, nogapps and canadian, the gfs has it meander for days but 2 days ago it had it hitting the us so not to sol;d on gfs solution if she forms, and the ukmet doesn't really formanything. so broad area of possibilities

"My big question because I have never even looked at this web site from Mid Nov - June, does it exist after Hurricane Season? If so, what on earth does it post since it is a "tropical weather" site?"....

There is a hurricane season in other parts of the world...southern hemisphere, etc........
my experience with squid is limited to dead ones, usually sauteed (or topped with a nice marinara).
hey maby when hurricane season is over leftyy will dissapear
What's your personal opinon, lefty?
MandyFSU,

Got a point, but I doubt I would find a python at 10,000 feet below sea level.

Also check your email
mandy i have no opinion at this point. so many things are possible based on themodels but i will say i belive we could see vince from that system
njsammy,

No problem, and you can keep the squid.. its one of the few foods I have ran against that I can't stomach (which is werid cause I have no issue with sushi)
sorry, selfish me, I totally forgot about the southern half of our world!!! feel totally stupid!
You know what the t-shirts say "It's all about me!"
Thanks for letting me know. I will definately take a look.

Radar has been busy but nothing looks like it is happening now. Maybe..S Fl can get back outside early next week?????

Any of our experts on line see anything happening anytime soon.

looks like a few spin-ups out there... remnants of Tammy back in the Gulf, Stan III still haging on south of Cuba, future Vince(?), east of leeward islands, and a cyclonic rotation at the tail end of "vince" wannabe blobbie.
thank you for repeating your previous post...
well really the tropics are a bit fishy to me. i think that something is going to come up soon. dont forget to look at my blog and tell me what you think.
Hi lefty. I wanted to thank you for all the information that you post. My co-workers and family are always calling me for hurricane updates. I of course relay your information which is pretty accurate. When the season is over for hurricanes and the winter weather approaches, where will you post weather information. I saw where you live in VA. I live near Raleigh, NC and will be waiting for a big snow this year. Would like to get the info from you.
271. dcw
This site is still here in winter, it's a weather site, not a tropical one.
Lefty, up for some modders?
273. code1
Hey Lefty,
Nice to see you back! Email me and let me know where to lurk when the trolls come out, so I can follow (and learn) from you guys. Promise I won't give it out!
hey junkie hows by bestes friend lol

ncleclerc,

I grew up about 45 miles southeast of Raliegh, but I moved up north (Toronto and then Upstate NY) in 1995
Jeff you lost me on that "bestes" friends thing. And I hope you were not talking about me being a troll. I am here due to my intrest in weather.

Anywho how are you today and how is the weather in that non-weather area?
orion,

Small world huh...did ever hear of Sanford nc? Visited Tornoto and Upstate NY when my family went to Chalk River, Ontario to visit my grandparents. Been in NC all my life.

For those that are interested the Miami NWS posted a report on Katrina.

Link
Jeff you can not really Laugh Out Loud that much. You would be dead from laughing if you did. Your posts would be much easier to read if you would stop LOL so much.

I bet that weather is nice most of the time, but it seems kinda boring to me. As much hype as Cali weather gets, I just don't think it is for me. I need the change and excitment.
back from the halls of work....actually got caught up

Did you mean that you lived in the hood upstate? I thought you lived in one of NC hood. We have some around.
ncleclerc,

Check your email on here
ncleclerc,

hood as in the nieghborhood of Sanford, not hood as in getthing shot, drug houses on every corner, pimps selling thier wares from the caddy down the road..

Althought I have lived in the hood before in Dunn and Raliegh
its getting breezy here...
Back to Orions questions.

1. Not the Delorean as 1.21 jigiwatts can be hard to come by. Now if we are talking about the garbage eater in two or three then we could talk. The phone booth is not to cool, but gets you around. Not sure about the other one. I will take answer 4 for question one. Bradd Pitts car, except I would not have kicked Jen out of it. Obvious reasoning here is that what ever car Bradd is driving most likely has a fine set of legs in the passenger seat.

2. Not sure about the mythical beast as lots of them have come to a bad end.

3. Orion. Don't know if he was an actual god, but have always been a fan of the great hunter.
Orion,

check your e-mail. thanks
Not complaining Jeff, just giving a little advice. One LOL or LMHO at the end of a post would let everyone know you are in a good mood. It is hard enough to decipher your posts any way. You should slow down a proof read your posts not for typos, but wording.
wow i made someone lurk lol cool
LMAO at Jeff:)

Whatever Jeff. I was just trying to be helpful. Sorry.
I feel rotation in the air...is that ULL starting to spin a low off of FL?
Hey Stormy, you still at work?
hey 21, hey stormy
no 21, got off at 1PM, I was outside and noticed it was gusty then it started to rain pretty hard...radar looks blah Link
hi 65
hi everybody else :-)
stormy, it has gotten a bit breazy this afternoon
StormJunkie,

1. Not the Delorean as 1.21 jigiwatts can be hard to come by. Now if we are talking about the garbage eater in two or three then we could talk. The phone booth is not to cool, but gets you around. Just in general so you could use the Deloran in Back to the future 2 or 3. As far as Brad Pitt he is okay, but he always been too cocky for my blood plus he smokes

2. Not sure about the mythical beast as lots of them have come to a bad end.

How about Santa Claus or the warez fairy (whoops the latter is real)

3. Orion. Don't know if he was an actual god, but have always been a fan of the great hunter.

Yes, and brownie points for choosing that. As why I didn't choose it Orion Darkwood is my pen name/alias, was orginally a AD&D character (Ranger if you know AD&D) hence the hunter theme fitted the character..

Also if you want more details.. click here Link
I am still at work, BLAH...
Link floater on FL, why? Is there something there? Loop-d-Loop it :-)
I guess I'm gonna finish my work (the imaginary work that I sit here and don't do when we are slow, b/c my boss refuses to let me outta here)!!!
Did you guys understand that, lol?
me too....but only for another hour.

stormy..I think the slight rotation is from the weak low that was n of cuba and is making its way to the ene
Hey, I'm back, the ISP issues must have been resolved. So Lefty, in short, what important things have I missed the past few days?
understood 21..that imaginary work can really get backed up lol
OK 21, u work real hard there...I know Im not! But I'll be there with u on Monday, unlike some lucky people! (65) :-)
Did not care about Bradd, just the girls that sit in the passneger seat.

As for Orion. Has always been my favorite constelation. Lots of nebulas and what not.

Fun questions though.

Is Santa Clause really a mythical beast?

Pensacola21 ,

I am doing the same (ie looking like I am working), but for different reasons my contract ends Oct 31st and my boss told me yesterday that my only job between now and then is to look busy and stay out of the way (which alot of people would kill for getting paid to goof off, its driving me up the wall)
Sorry to hear about the job Orion.
SJ - going off on santa??? Come on, getting around in that sleigh with all those presents at his age is hard work. LOL :-)
to all of you...Stormy, Orion, Lefty, Coconut, weatherspirit, and any others I have left off.

I have learned about so many more links and locations to find weather info since I started "lurking" around this blog. Thanks to you all for sharing your information souces. Also, loved the friendly chit, chat earlier today when nothing immediately serious was going on.
Thanks and keep the weather info coming.
Hey! Sunshine!

Hello, Sunshine! :-)
21, I really understand, really!
Have not seen sunshine in DAAAAAAYYYYYYSSSSS...
Not going off on him Stormy. Just questioning the mythical beast description. :-)
StormJunkie,

OIC, Don't see what people see in JLo. Looks a little shanky to me, ditto for bratty spears and her ilk (guess its the whole maucfactured look). Give me someone like Jodie Foster anyday..

As far as Santa, techinally he is a mythical creature but its a little on the gray side because like King Authur, Robin Hood and others thier is nuggets of truth in the myth (if you couldn't fiqure it out mythology is one of my subjects of interest)
and Dude, code1, Zap, Sky, Rad, 21, etc...
can't keep up with all of you that post interesting info.
thanks
Mandy, missing some D?
mandy...we had more rain here today....yuck!!!!
In the winter we can all come here and complain how cold we are.... "it's going to get in the 40's tonight" ... brrr.. We never get any sympathy but it can get cold down here.. different cold..
don't think its over yet 65
Agree about Jlo. Now Jenifer Aniston is a different story. Always been a huge fan of Jodie, although I don't think she looked too good in Flight Plan. Always been a big Helen (forehead) Hunt fan too.

Figured you had some knowledge of mythology.

Going way back. I agree that Bugs Bunny's woods would be the best place to find/see a good fight.
OIC?
StormJunkie,

Thanks, still got a few days left to find another one.. But IT in my area is real dicey these days.. I am starting to seriously consider bailing to someplace where the IT market is better (probably back to NC since I have some support in the area)
I know story....i know. Just looked at radar and there is more coming up
billsfaninsofla

what city are you from? I thought you were in my area. You even sound like you don't like cool/cold weather either! I get cold at 70 degrees. Anyway, sorry you are a Buffalo fan in Dolphin Country; but some of my best friends are Bills Fans also! Nothing wrong with that but at our house it is Dolphins all the way!
Orion, thought you might say overseas. IT seems to be getting a little dicey in the states. Are you on the phone support (call center) side or the hands on side?
StormJunkie,

OIC - Oh I see
BRB - Be right back
FYI - For your information

This site lists a few Link
I'm confused. Is the big blob south of Cuba Yucastan? I though he was supposed to move across Florida today. Or is that something else?
That is Yucastan, just all of the convection is well to the E and SE. I think.

Knew the others, just could not figure out OIC. Did not check the link as I like to try and figure them out then if I have to I will ask.
I am a programmer with 15 years in the business mostly with Mircosoft lanaguges (ASP/VB classic and .NET), SQL Server but I got a whole host of other languges, platforms and databases under my belt
Is that part of the industry getting shipped overseas also? Or is it a little more stable then the CC side?
Anyhoot check ya'll ppl later I am bailing from work might be back on in a couple of hours..

Also I put up a blog entry with some winter records
later orion..have a good weekend
StormJunkie,

its complicated.. I will answer your question later in a email (and remenber the answer will probably apply to the northeast)
Orion, thanks for the link. many times I have wondered what these abbreviations stand for. I also thought you would say you were going overseas as a lot of IT people are getting jobs there. Good luck to you!
damhikt SJ n OR wr ot need to gal LOL Link

Cooling off outside up here in NW FL... Feels goooood.....
Orion - Goodluck with your contract and all.. I hope you find another job, an even BETTER one!!!
21, I don't want to hear about cooling off unless it is coming down here LOL
Weatherdude- How about I get a really big fan and try to send some your way, okay?
HI has everything pooped out without a possiblity of resurrection? Skeeter listed 3 investigation areas earlier and is now down to one.

Exactly why I need a new camera! Leaving - gotta go home and get ready for the relatives coming from Louisianna tonight. Ya'll have a good weekend and see ya Monday.
Hey Lefty, what's up with the impressive convection left over from Stan in the western Caribbean? DO you think it will form?
Time for me to head out....taking my daughter (8) to a sockhop at her school. Have a great weekend all....

05,
Well if anyone can do what he wants with the weather..
In the reign of rain....

Over 5.5" so far today and over 23" so far this month. Wettest month of all time here!
On coolwx.com/usstats I was looking around--much of Florida is around 29.60" with St. Petersburg at 29.58" Kinda surprised we are not seeing more wind--that pressure is pretty low for a tropical or non-tropical system here. Pressure here has fallen to lower than it was during Tammy, with a reading of 29.65" (Tammy's lowest hourly observation was 29.66")
There is a good size convection blob just south of the Cayman Islands that catches my eye......
05,
that was cute
Lefty, do you think a hurricane like Mitch could spin up sometime this month? The water temps in the carribean are pretty warm...
primez, I think a Mitch is possible, and that a major in the NW Caribbean is quite likely this month.
I'm dressing up as a hurricane this halloween!

I'm so sick of tropical blobs, blobs be gone!
StSimons, it's strange that we haven't had a major hurricane in the Carribean since Emily. In fact, not even a hurricane.
You are right primez! That is odd!
If it wasnt such a shear fest in the Atlantic right now we would have atleast 3 named storms out there now
A NON-TROPICAL LOW PRESSURE AREA CENTERED ABOUT 550 MILES NORTHEAST
OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS CONTINUES TO SHOW SIGNS OF ORGANIZATION.
THIS SYSTEM HAS SOME POTENTIAL FOR TROPICAL OR SUBTROPICAL
DEVELOPMENT OVER THE NEXT DAY OR TWO AS IT MOVES WEST-NORTHWESTWARD
AT 10 TO 15 MPH.

latest gfs forms a strong cyclone that now instead of meandering off the ast coast heads north into the nw england area. north of long island. i personally belive it will hit the us just more south. thats per the other model runs. will have another update on it late tonight when te other global model runs come out arond 1230 or so
Glad to see you back leftyy
i had alot of work for school i had been neglecting i had to do this week. doing just enough to pass lol
I think the Canadian model is looking pretty reasonable.

It renders the threat near 25N 60W as spinning off to the North while another system grows southwest of the Bahamas near the tail end of a trough.

It does all of this in 72 hours, so perhaps a bit fast, but we'll see.

Well sure missed your weather insight, doesn't look like much going on short term, at least here on east coast Florida this weekend, guess I'll have to mow the lawn lol.
Guygee,

C'mon, "a work of scholarship"?

The link you provide is to a very left of center web site. While it may be very well sourced, and may bring up some important points, please at least give the disclaimer about the political viewpoint that is represented on the site.
Yah lefty, the Canadian and GFS are very similar, except reversed:

CMC says the northern system will be absorbed by the trough and form a system to the south.

The GFS says the southern system will be absorbed while the northern is left to spin up.
Hey Guygee, all the articles are fine but the Daily KOS is a left wing rag of a website. I would probable eliminate those from your list just for credibility purposes.
all models except the ukmet form a cyclone from the are north of the lesser antilies in 48-72 hours. track is the question and it looks like the cold front might speed up more than thought so it would miss the cyclone and the high behind it would steer it west and into the midatlantic states. feel pretty sure that if it forms in the time frome the models suggest and the cold front maitinas it speed or increases it per the 18utc gfs than a landfall on the east coast looks highley possible. intensity is another problem but ships makes her a cat 2 in 96 hours. we will see
will hte gfs and cmc form the same system form the same area. the difference is that the canadian forms 2 systems while the gfs forms one but in both models its the southern system that forms. i doubt there will be 2 systems per the cmc and that the gfs looks good on formation but steers it way to north in my opinion. here is a link to the newest gfs.

Link
Remember last week when we were saying "every model except is forming a system near the bahamas in the near future."

Then out pops Tammy, and now the same thing this week.

The CMC closely predicted the track of Tammy well before the GFS did, as well as calling for a tropical storm (I remember this because the CMC showed it passing over Jax).

What can I say, I am impressed.

JupiterFL - Daily KOS is to the left of the mainstream, but the story on the 500 boat flotilla being turned back was picked up from a report of a member of the flotilla, the original story is on a site called "Securing America" (doesn't sound too left wing to me). Here is the link to the original (registration required:

I for one believe the mainstream press is too much in bed with the Government, it just has too many issues on it's want list for legislation, so I read from many sources, including overseas and so-called "lefty" sites, then I decide for myself what is the most probable truth of the matter. Upon reading this particular story, I take the probability of its truth to be high.

will, the cmc flip flopped many time on tammy. i forgot who i was talking to but i had to point that out as well, now the gfs had track pretty good but didn;t form a system. now the other global modells were all out to lunch on the system because they had it crossing florida
also will the gfs formed this syetm we are talking bout 5-7 days ago in its runs. belive i said in 10 -13 days the gfs shows a strong landfalling cyclone in the carolinas. gfs has been pretty good with formation of most systems this year but its tracks have been questionable
here u go will some cmc runs showing the flip flopping

04/00 Link

04/12 Link

05/00 Link

05/12 Link
now of all the models for tammy the cmc did do a good job but the flip flopping made it unreliable for forcasting . now i really want to see what the next cmc says as well as the next gfs. i belive the gfs 5-7 days ago was the best and its timming of the front looked good vs what is happening and its track of the cyclone was close to the cmc run and it showed a landfall in the mid atlantic. that looks to be a high possibility to me
Does anyone have any idea how many times a system has struck the Carolinas/Mid Atlantic form the due E? I don't remember it happening, how rare is it?
Yah I think I will use your model source from here out.

Anyhow I was using the FSU site and CMC there appears to nearly make two systems, but only one TS/ Hurr materializes in the end. But GFS and CMC definitely spot the system in the same spot, just north of Dom.Rep..

One thing I'd like to know...neither of them show anything significant coming out of the current hot spot NE of the Lesser Antilles...so from where does the Bahamas system form, at the tail end of trough?

BRB
Just my opinion. I don't really believe much that the mainstream media says either. I just happen to believe it slants more left than right. FEMA definitely made mistakes but so do we all. Sometimes they come at great consequence. However, without mistakes we would never progress through time. Officials screwed up at all levels and lets just learn from what happened, both as a nation and as individual states.
torn dunno, but this sytem we are talking about would not strike from due east. it will come in from the sout. thats oer the latest model runs
will its a tgropica wave moving thru the carribean right now and convergence from a weak trough at gthe surface from the 1011 low. the gfs diispatesthat low and te cmc makes it a cyclone so thats thwe difference in those 2 models. if u look at the latest carribean ir u can see thunderstorm activity starting to flare up near domr and pr
Well said Jupiter, turned out to be a nice day up here in Seb. how bout you?
Is it just me, or does this situation keep getting more and more confusing? Each model run shows storms pooping up in different plces, while dropping others. I'm very perplexed right now.
dunno what ur seeing torn but i have not seen that
JupiterFL - I agree completely, that is why it is important
to document and understand the Katrina debacle, to learn
from it.

I've been collecting the information on the emergency
response to Katrina, it is just that the last main link I
posted (2nd post above) sort of summarized a lot of what I
had been reading, and it provided sources.

An older friend from Tennessee once told me, "Believe
nothing you hear and half of what you see". But I need a
little more clarity, so I look for as much information as
I can, then look for hidden motives, spin, and deliberate
omissions, finally I try to seperate the truth from the
BS based on my understanding of how the world works.

Anyways, last post on Katrina and FEMA, don't want to get
too political here again (sorry folks).

The past few days, some have shown the Cuba wave developing (will it?), a wave in the middle on the Atlantic (I think it will), the nontropical low becoming tropical or subtropical (I'm almost sure it will), but they have flipped-flopped on Tammy, flip-flopped on these systems, and even shown several systems coming off the coast of Africa. I think what I want to say is that the Atlantic is chock full of activity, and keeping track of it is becoming more difficult. For instance Lefty, you say that the system shown to form would approach from the south; however, I look at the GFS and see a system approaching from the west. Are these different storms or the same storms. It just seems to be getting hard to keep track of what is going on.
torn first thats the old gfs. i was refering to the newest gfs which shows landfall in new england but think the track is to far right based on other models. second other models have not formed those storms. they were possible areas of concern but no models formed any of those storms. but if u could find some models to shpw me i'dlove to see it

here is the newest gfs

Link
torn i can't find any global model runs showing any formation of the cuba system, the atlanitc wave or the non-tropical low. now if ur refering to the bamm, ships and gfdl, they are specific models so when set to a certaion area they show potential for development but usually start with a closed circulation so not good for development. global models shpw closed circulation development and while track issues with tammy almost all formed her for days and is the only storm they formed prior till yesterdays runs wich showed the system we are talking about forming now
Mike, I remember that flip/flop as to whether she's turn northward or into the gulf. However all I really cared about was where she was gonna make landfall and how intense, namely because it was saying right on top of me.

GFS wasn't showing much forming out of the disturbance on 04/00, whereas CMC 04/00was showing an impressively accurate prediction.

Same with GFS 03/12 vs CMC 03/12

And same with GFS 04/12 vs CMC 04/12

Sorry Lefty, getting back into the groove after a coupled of days forced off.
will did u read whwere i said the gfs did not showe formation but showed a northward trend while the other moddels showed a south florida track? i ahve said it 100times since she made landfall. i also stated that the cmc was the best of all but did flip flop atleast twice. which is why it was not impressive but just good. once more, the gfs had track but not formation down.
its all good tron. i think ur just confusing the talk and model displays of fr.masters and others for what the global models were actually showing. wich is why i wasn;t talking much on either of those systems becasue i saw no formation and shear was going to be a problem.
will here i am saying it 50 mins ago lol

will, the cmc flip flopped many time on tammy. i forgot who i was talking to but i had to point that out as well, now the gfs had track pretty good but didn;t form a system
Yes, I certainly understand that the GFS had an accurate track, but it made nothing of the system.

The CMC had a very accurate landfall track and intensity, as well as a fairly accurate post-landfall track.

But Mike I know that you know when a tropical system is pounding on your doorstep, landfall and intensity are the holy grail.

Just my opinion there, not arguing although both of us are debaters by nature ;)

will none of the gl;obalmodels are used for intenisty. none of them. thats why we have inteniosty only models. so the gfs had the steering currents down and we knew we had a formed system so track was the only question from the models. also we are talking a weak ts if that. that formed right off the coast. threat was minimal and i have seen more rain today from tammy than u probly did from tammy lol
Yes, if I trusted the GFS for intensity then we'd have 20 cat 5's this season. However intensity models are often out to lunch as well...even today SHIPS was calling for a TS to form out of Cuba Low.

Long story short: I was impressed by the CMC prediction of intensity and landfall, even in the face of the great GFS. That's all I'm saying bro.

Okay I think I've met my defend Canada quota for the year...
Oh and lefty btw I am in med school so that means I am all knowing, I am greater than joo. **cough*CLydeFrog*cough**
i don;t understand why ur comparing the cmc to the gfs. i stated the cmc did a fgood job for a change but i must note its intensity was way off lol. it had a cat 1 when she was a weak ts so don;t compare the model intenisties. regardless the gfs did not form it track was there and thats what u take from models.

i also explained to torn why the ships models say what they say. those models are inferring we already have a closed circulation not that one will form. thats how it is used and is only reliable after formation of the closed circulation. thats why i rarely refer to it befor a system has formed. u have to understand that to intialise some of these models they have to tweak the storm in it to get a good run out of it
lol will thats funny
Hey Lefty, even the NHC believes that the low will develop.
torn i never said i belive it won or will. we have been discussing the model runs and the nhc does not belive it will or won't. they suggest possible development meaning that the conditions will be conductive for development in the next 24-36 hours
this is what they said torn

IT COULD DEVELOP INTO A TROPICAL CYCLONE WITHIN THE NEXT 36 HRS.
THE LOW IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE MOVING GENERALLY W/NW OVER THE
NEXT FEW DAYS REMAINING FAR FROM ANY LAND AREAS EXCEPT FOR
BERMUDA.
thye said couldn not likely or expected but could. thats why u need to read everythign word they say as it has a different meaning than what ur assuming it does.
Intersting about the SHIPS, I miss some posts b/c I can't always read everything, yo know how it is, too many posts.

Hey man what can I say, I've learned a lot from you!

Mike you're sponsored by GFS TP models and apparel, arent ya! ARENT YA!

I KNEW IT!

IMO...lol for once i agre wiht the amartours here lol theres way too much sher in the bahamas know that this is the tim to be loomking at the western caribearan lol the models ar not to be tursted in lat saeson lol
hmmmmmmmmmm dissing clyde i dont like that
That low is looking more impressive, if that is indeed the blob in the upper-middle of the loop:

Link
lol yeah will

naw its just that some models are tropical cyclone specific, ie ships bamm gfdl, and than u have global models, gfs, cmc, ukmet, nogapps

the specific models need to start woth a closed circulation of atleast 25kts or they dissipate the system. someitmes they dissipate the system anyway, even after it forms until it reaches a certain strength. thats why the storm specific models are not used for possible formation but track and intensity after the fact. thats why we are disscussing the cmc and gfs anyways lol
right torn but what are saying is the cmc forms 2 cyclones. that one there and another near pr. now the gfs forms one and dissipates the one ur looking at. thats the most likley scenario but we have seen 2 systems form in close proximity befor this year. so wewill have to wait and see and the next model runs out at 12:30 tonight should help clear things up specially since the system is forcasted to form in 24-36 hours by all but the ukmet
Let's see, that would be Vince and Wilma. My prediction to get to Gamma is looking pretty good right about now.
torn only the cmc shows 2 storms and as of yet, nothing has formed lol. so until it does u can't count ur chickens
i thimk now taht leftyyy has finealy lerned abut the models his predidicking is beter lol just keep an eye on the wesrtern caribaeran lol
hey cosmic whats the event lol
anyone out there have weird dreams?
anyone out there?
Hey Stormy, just passing by and you looked lonely. How's it going?
for anyone who does not have this Link, I have found it to be the most useful for pulling cool water vapor and i.r. satellites.
Coco, my fish died, but he came to me the last night in my dreams and Im all spooked out....
What happened in your dream? I'm sorry your fish died!
oh man scary lol sry for your fish man
Well, we were in a tank together and he was sad and I felt he was sick (in my dreams)...u know like esp feeling...spooked! Ever happen to u?
Well that's a first. A few firsts, really. I NEVER pay for internet content. But. I tried (a first here) to become a paying viewer here. But. The system won't let me pay. I bet that's a first....how often do you hear an internet site refused money? Must be storm-related. But WHAT storm?
No, can't say it's happened to me.

So did you have this dream and then your fish died afterwards?
haha lol refusing money lol wish it had done that for me lol
lol stormy, hold that thought, she's on a mcdonalds run right now, but i think she will want to comment on this one when she is back......
Wow, folks. Welcome to a SLOW night at Weather Underground.
Well I rhink we all have a strange dream st some time......I know I have , and I don't drink so there goes THAT excuse....
Pensacola:who's on a mcdonalds run?
whatsup?
dead fish, mcdonalds, and an internet site that is to good for ff's money
Yeah kinda odd...I hit "Authorise $5 Payment" and it flipped to a page FULL of dire warnings and computerese that I don't understand at all.

pcola,
Strange day here in FWB. How bout there? After all the rain today, the wind really started. Coming in from the north now and gusting 16-21 mph now. Weird for this time of night. How is it in So. Fla ccfla, stormy, billsfan, anyone else down there?
does that system in the middle (around 58 and 28 n) have a little rotation to it?
It is a 1010mb low.
Hi code1, I see you came out to play.
22 guess 21 mentioned me...we have stuff in common, work, weather, hurricane destruction, etc...the norm :-)
Just a blah day in sofla. Drizzle and rain on and off. Sometime overcast, sometimes the sun peeked out. blah, blah, blah... I'd much rather have one extreme or another. This middle stuff is tiresome.
yes it was very strange here also, dark, gloomy, and windy, now its really nice and cool, that front finally made it past us.....
actually quite nice here, had a sunset, oh beautiful it was...maybe go to beach tomorrow to see if there still is one left.
That's true stormy. The sunset was beautiful. Bright orange. (and, no, I didn't run from the orange in the sky)
Well here in Cent Fl..just up the street from the Rabid Rodent...my outside thermometer shows 78, and I was just out a few ago and felt chilly....breeze is enough to do that i guess.
ok people, im going to turn this over to 21 now, need to get the rug rats in order and break out the blankets......
Yes, I actually wore a shirt with sleeves today! Brr...
todays orange was quite welcome. :-)
Lots of waves out there, just nothing yet to talk about...Im tired and scared to sleep, no more fish dreams, or other things....
21, did u buy me a chocolate milk shake? :-)
Hey all, 21 here, does anyone know how to switch blog names?? I can only seem to use the Pensacola21 @ work..
That is why I was out, Coconut. Only place i hadn't looked for my jacket was in the truck. Found it. Memo to me : Buy new jacket, store someplace other than in back of truck next summer.
Stormy - How about a hot fudge sundae? lol
You know, I am having this awful feeling... LIKE I AM AT WORK!!!
Jeff has a new blog up
I'm a pet person....so sorry to hear about the fish. On the other hand, I'm happy to read earlier about the poodle being pluffed.
.
.
On to tropical cyclone talk.......keep an eye on the Western Caribean, especially the southwest. Something is brewing down there. All the other areas of interest in the Atlantic basin will run into too much shear.
funny ff...
21 YES, sundae will definately work, please hot wire to my personal account LOL....To change your name, log out, then log in with your work email address and password...but I know its u :-)

64 degrees right now and still breezy. I'm envious of your sunset, 12 hour days didn't offer me the opportunity to see one this past week, nor will it next week. Won't take another contract like that one again. I need the sunshine! I'm going to the beach tomorrow as well, even if it is overcast or ugly. Need some down time to look at the "big water" and soak a few cold ones. Always makes me feel better. Yeah coco, I'm out to play or lurk, depending on the posts. Have a good weekend everyone!
Where are all the grown-ups?
Uh, Pensacola, I am thinking more Hot Chocolate than Sundae....this sudden blast of chillt weather is not to my liking.
Interesting, Cosmic: so you are lurking when our little a.m. group posts and we lurk (usually) at night.
Hey stormydee - You still there? Have have had weird and vivid dreams all of my life, more so as a child, but still even today. Part of it is because I enter the semi-awakened state often. It is when your consciousness becomes active but your body is sill asleep, paralyzed. That is when you keep thinking you woke up and got out of bed, but then you realize your are still dreaming, repeating over and over.

I also often have musical dreams. I have heard the buzz-drone of what George Carlin calls "The Big Electron". Very soothing.

Mostly, I think dreams serve the purpose of reorganizing memory from the previous day, sorting through what is important and what is not. When stuck on a math problem, I have woken up with the answer on occasion. Dreams are very strange for me.
Uh Oh....chillt = chilly, please. I can spell, but type is a whole other thing grrrrrrrr.
We know what you meant
I have pretty vivid dreams but I don't recall music. Perhaps it has something to do with your math background.
CoconutCreekFLA - Probably because I was a frustrated musician. Played in a working garage band, relegated to Bass Guitar. Also trumpet, french horn, a little alto sax. I have a good ear, but lack the physical coordination and discipline/time. So sometimes I dream of playing original music, the music is subconsciously generated in my dream, and I can sometimes remember the tune when I wake up, but I can't execute it on a musical instrument. Fingers too clumsy, voice too loud...
I just want to say something eerie, but true.

On the night of May 31st of this year, I actually had a dream of looking at the tracking map of a category 1 hurricane about to hit Long Island, NY.

It was a completely random dream, and the next morning was the first day of the Atlantic Hurricane Season! Ever since that night, I've been keeping an eye on the tracks of every storm that pops up.
Anyone around?
