Dallas beats Chicago for first snow of the season; record snowless streak in Chicago

By: Dr. Jeff Masters, 4:23 PM GMT on December 11, 2012

It's been a bad year for building snowmen in Chicago. It last snowed in Chicago on March 4, 2012, and Chicago has now gone 281 days in a row without snow, its longest such streak on record. Weather records for Chicago date back to 1871. Dallas, Texas had its first snow of the season yesterday, picking up 0.1". This is only the second time on record that Dallas has had an earlier first snow than Chicago. The only other time this has happened was in 1951, when Dallas received 0.6" on November 2, and Chicago had 4.4" on November 3.

With accumulating snow looking highly unlikely through at least December 14, Chicago's record for latest accumulating snow of the season may also fall. The average date for Chicago's first measurable snowfall is November 16, and the latest first snow of the season on record occurred on December 16, 1965. Rain mixed with snow is expected this weekend on the 15th and 16th, but the precipitation may fall entirely as rain. The lack of snow in Chicago this year is reflective of both how warm and dry it's been. The 25.20" of rain Chicago has received so far in 2012 is more than 10" below average, and the city experienced its 10th driest January - November period on record. Record warmth in early December brought Chicago only its 3rd 70°F December day on December 3.

True but that would be some of the drama ..... and would it turn tropical in the August rocket fueled Gulf.

Back in 2009 we saw the fronts extend that far down.Which also served as a shield and kept shear levels high.

We also saw a similar pattern setup at the tail end of the 2010 season in the GOM.

light frost here this AM in SE TX, that will finish off the tree leaves and grass will be stunted and no more grass growth for a while. 80 degree days was causing grass to grow

yeah i must have had some rain last night, everything is wet but now its all north and way south of us..tonight might be our turn when the front gets here

Send the cold weather our way. This mess ahead of the front hasn't given my immediate area any significant rain, but many other areas of the peninsula have received beneficial rains.

We need SNOOOOOOOOW!.
Good morning everyone. I woke this morning to a rosy sunrise then the sky turned grey with cloud cover. I hope we get some rain out of this mess and then some cool dry air. That would be nice for the weekend.
This front was strong but did not penetrate the entire GOM, and a plume of deep moisture is in place over the southern Gulf. Once the winds turn SE this moisture will be moving NW towards S TX as warm front develops on Thursday.

Today is 12-12-12, there are 9 days till the winter solstice

You are amongst the forerunners of a new paradigm who will set the precedents upon which the ground rules of the new world will be based. You have identified yourself to yourself and have dared to stand alone in the Light of your inner truth, while others, still cloaked in the self-righteousness of consensus thinking, throw stones-as the very fabric of that reality unravels. And you have exercised the wisdom to stand firm in your truth and watch quietly as the cards are shuffled and reshuffled and the lives of others succumb to the shifting tides of change.

Most of it fell along the immediate coast just north of Juno Beach, where drainage and infiltration happen quickly, due to the sand dune geology. US1 was flooded and cars were left stranded for some time last night.

Areas inland that rely on canal networks with mucky flat soils flooded more with less rainfall, some homes were damaged. Some residential streets were still impassable this morning, inland Jupiter.

For the record, I have a banana tree here in Iceland, along with a bunch of other tropicals.

Indoors, mind you ;) But yes, there are plants like that growing this far north. And I know from the experience of others that it's even possible to grow palms outdoors in colder weather than ours. The trick is, come winter, bundle them up into a spire, wrap the spire in incandescent christmas lights, then wrap the whole thing (lights and all) in insulation.

On a much easier front, I've been thinking about, if I have a spare banana pup or similar come next summer, hiking it and a bag of soil up to the top of a mountain or onto a glacier or such and planting it there for a few months (while the weather is warm enough not to kill it) to confuse the utter heck out of hikers.

I hope so! We need the rain really bad. The frontal convection doesn't look that impressive, yet, but the upper level energy inducing the rainfall to the west is still further west of the front, once it crosses the front into the warm sector with the deeper moisture and higher instability we may see the line become more impressive.

We can't count on it though, so far Monday actually had the most impressive weather when it wasn't predicted, the models completely screwed up across the board with yesterdays forecast so we'll see how they do today. The models are even somewhat wrong today, at least with timing, most of the models I saw showed the rainfall already crossing our area by now, with more overcast conditions and more stability. It is more unstable in the eastern gulf than it was forecast to be thanks to full or mostly full sun so far today.

With the lack of model confidence, I'm not fully sure what to expect. However, it at least looks like we should see a good round of rain and storms for everyone later.

And I don't need to come up there to see the kind of stuff you're talking about. SE TX and western LA is about as diverse as it gets with our vast collection of woody plants...

But FWIW, I would love to see your plants. Do you have any pictures you can share or on your blog? I have a greenhouse and would love to diversify it as much as I can come Spring....
