Atlantic still quiet, new wave moves off Africa

By: Dr. Jeff Masters, 7:08 PM GMT on July 29, 2008

After a busy last few weeks, it seems that things have quieted down in the Atlantic. The only 'excitement' to be had is a new wave that has just moved off the coast of Africa. Convection in the wave is limited and certainly not organized. Development is not expected, but we will continue to monitor the system if only for a lack of anything else to watch.

Basically, the Caribbean system will move NNW, then NW straight into the middle of the Gulf, move over a warm eddy, blossom into a CAT 5, then move straight into New Orleans. There I said it. Haha

(Let's hope that keeps StormTop and all his incarnations subdued for a while, lol)

CAN you beleve this guy i lost EVERYTHING!!!!

Just having a little StormTop humor, that's all. Not wishcasting anything.

JFV, Don't sweat it! Your a good guy and I really value your very positive attitude 99% of the time!

Elsewhere it looks as if the NHC has backed off on Invest 98L...However it doesent look like it has decreased much in organization so I don't see a probable reason for the chances of development to drop....they may believe that the dry air should keep it in check. Which is possible, However I still think this is a very impressive wave...and if it had came off a little further south we would definitely have something to worry about...

The chances for development dropped because of the thick mass of SAL and SSTs of 24C...that is why it has nearly no convection.
I must admit.. yesterday was way over the line about JFV.. it actually turned to personal. If you don't like him.. ignore him, but don't keep flogging a dead horse.

The only dumb question is the one not asked.. I know.. I have asked lots of them, and got good serious replies back.
Its poofed for now at least

i've been trying to get this question answered for quite a while...

is the wave-like presentation of that belt of moisture in the tropics due to MJO? if not, why is it like a cresting/breaking wave instead of a continuous, flat belt?

Are you referring to the ITCZ?
hOME FROM WORK NOW SO IS 98l A FISH STORM LIKE I THOUGHT OR HAS IT DEVELOPED SOME SINCE 8AM?
My wind gauge was eaten by the hurricane. You can see me starting to lose it...right after I get the two people into safety, look at my pocket. That silver thing is the gauge, and it's comin' out. The hurricane ate it just seconds later! :(

Nice TPW. Show's 98's circulation and organization well.

that graph basically shows the position of the loop current (off the western coast of Florida) and any warm water eddies the current has spun off (important for rapid intensification). just know the red stuff is the bad stuff! LOL

any thoughts on the wave by the islands at 60 west it just showed up today and seems to be gaining more convection couild this form into something too closer to home as it moves wnw thanks
fair enough...I'll do likewise....
3027. yes, why does the ITCZ look like rolling waves? there must be pulses of energy causing the "crests" of those waves. are the "crests" due to the MJO or something else?

I'm really not quite sure why the ITCZ looks like that. I know it changes in position and appearance often but I'm not sure why it crests like that. I don't think the MJO plays a role in it though...I think its just natural.
3044. it's weird because you can watch the pulses of energy/moisture through the ITCZ...i'm fairly sure those pulses can play a part in TC formation....

Those are tropical waves moving through the Atlantic (hence the "wave" part). The crests are areas of low pressure associated with the waves.

Sounds like most everyone is a little testy tonight so I will not stay on for long.

98L is not looking very good right now but it still needs to be watched. SAL has been cleared in the area and this will allow for the waters to warm more quickly. Link

The SST in the area still looks low for any real development now. I am still concerned that it might hold together well enough to get to 40-50W as long as it does not move further north. Link

IR looks much weaker than last night but there is still a punch to 98L. ( goto Navy site, could not get link to attach)

Shear is still an issue for where it currently is. Link But shear looks to be decreasing in front of it. Link

Last night I said we need to wait a few days and see what is going on when it get to 40-50W. It has not progressed very far west today so I am going to stay with the same statement. We still need to watch this one but near term development does not look likely.

During active periods of hurricane season, these rules will be strictly enforced. Violations will be met with a minimum 24 hour ban.

Tips

Do not enter games of oneupmanship with trolls or bloggers you find to be annoying. You will be banned along side them, as your verbal jousts consume the space and time everyone else is sharing. The atlantic system coming off the Cape Verdes looks like it is having trouble keeping enough upward motion to sustain the kind of cold cloud we saw earlier.

The trough split next week looks "interesting" in the northern gulf. Of course that may just be me trying to brew up trouble for my week in planet Houston, but I dont like trough splits with pulsing ridges over the top. But then again, why borrow trouble, till after Aug 10

bastardi, kinda interesting particularly if some of that carrib energy can get north...

Frankly, I think many have forgotten that this blog is really about exchanging ideas and chatting about weather, not a contest for who is the best armchair tropical forecaster.

My choice now would be a Whaler 320 Outrage Cuddy Cabin with twin 325's.

The quality of workmanship is superb and the hull is bullet proof. Very solid and a great rough weather vessel
Hello everyone.

Well, with nothing of note going on anywhere from Africa to Brownsville, Texas, I will bid you all adieu for tonight. 98L has gone into stealth mode which will have a serious adverse impact on the psyche of many.

Until tomorrow then, good night all

Slightly off topic, but not really, or something. Is there any site/software/tool out there that has loops of weeks/months/years of satellite photos? I could do it myself, grabbing all the dated images and merging them together, but I was hoping someone has already done so. I'm curious to watch the weather patterns over a given region, animated, in a time range longer than a day or so.

Storm... say something is slowly spinning up somewhere... anywhere...

A 1005 mb low was located in stormtops forecast office. Pressures have fallen steadily during the past 6 hours. Recent satellite imagery indicates this area has been producing increased convection, and continues to become better organized. Current forecast motion and projected track takes this low from stormtops office, curving it north to stormkats meteorology class he is attending.

A reconaissance flight is scheduled for tomorrow morning to further investigate this area to determine if a closed Low Level Circulation exists.

You don't use that sense of humour often.. but when you do.. its a good one

could 98L influence the wave behind it? if so how?

4,000-something.
3319 yes but I don't know how
I think a similar scenario happened in 2005 TS Gamma couldn't form because a system in front of it was hogging the warm water so it took a while for gamma to form
Blog like crazy so we can break a record lol
is there a chance something could form off the tail end of a low soon?

StormW, I sent you an email on your normal email addy. I don't send joke emails as a habit, but I had to send you that one.

the XTRP shows that 98L has started more of a west movement, if it continues it will be moving into a much better enviroment as its over 24C waters right now
Quoting tkeith:
could 98L influence the wave behind it? if so how?
by adding to the water vapour in front of it it also needs to run below 15n above 12 n and the timing off the coast has to conside with dmin as to take advantage of dmax to develope strong enough to thrive during the next day dmin if strong convection remains after 24 to 36 hrs then they may be declared

I put the video up

Well worth seeing
good evening kdav :), another tough night for your soxs.

yes 98L is over 24C waters and has dry air, but it might be a fighter if it hangs on another 12 hours conditions should improve
3353. centex
98L 8PM NHC, notice how you need to read both to get full picture.

TW0 - AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE IN THE VICINITY OF THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS IS MOVING TO THE NORTHWEST AT 10 TO 15 MPH. SHOWER ACTIVITY
ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM HAS DIMINISHED.. AND THE POTENTIAL FOR TROPICAL CYCLONE FORMATION IN THIS AREA IS DECREASING.

TWD - TROPICAL WAVE IS ALONG 20W/21W S OF 22N MOVING NW AT 10-15 KT WITH A 1008 MB LOW ALONG THE WAVE NEAR 16N. ALTHOUGH THIS SYSTEM
REMAINS UN-ORGANIZED...THE LOW HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME A TROPICAL DEPRESSION BEFORE MOVING OVER COOLER WATERS ON THU.

That's not convection. That's a strawberry.
98L still needs to get out of the cooler SSTs. This system still has a very long way to go. For the NHC to take it serously, it must build (or at least maintain convection during Dmin hours)...
