Another extreme typhoon for the Philippines

By: Dr. Jeff Masters, 2:35 PM GMT on November 10, 2006

The Philippines are bracing for the onslaught of their third major typhoon of the past six weeks, as Category 4 Typhoon Chebi bears down on the main island of Luzon. The Philippines have been hit particularly hard this typhoon season. Super Typhoon Cimaron made landfall October 29 as a Category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 160-180 mph. Cimaron killed at least 15, left 2500 homeless, and destroyed about 8% of the island's rice and corn crop. However, disaster officials called the destruction wrought by Cimaron as "minimal" compared to the destruction of devastating Typhoon Xangsane, which hit Luzon on September 27 as a Category 4 storm. Xangsane killed 218 in the Philippines, did over $100 million in damage, and left tens of thousands homeless. Xangsane went on to deliver a serious blow to Vietnam as a Category 2 typhoon, killing 70.

The amazing thing about all three of these typhoons is that they performed remarkable feats of explosive intensification, deepening from a tropical storm to a Category 4 typhoon in less than 24 hours. It's unusual to see one storm do this in a season, let alone three--and all in the same place! Chebi, which means swallow in Korean, is expected to continue to intensify today into a Super Typhoon with 150 mph winds before making landfall early Saturday morning (Philippines time). The 7am satellite intensity estimate from the NRL Navy website put Chebi's winds at 145 mph, with a central pressure of 916 mb. Chebi is the 18th Category 4 or 5 tropical cyclone to form so far this year globally; the average number of these extreme cyclones is 17 per year.

I'll have an update on Chebi Saturday.

Those are the ones that Bite..Quick developers..small cored ..Tight Gradient.Hopefully the impacts will be like the last one..not the wallop of Xangsene.
hmm why there isnt a research on that spot? should be something that let it go that quick over there?
i guess i am second
or not
Wow what a year for the Philippines
Wow...that storm was a TD this time yesterday.
yeah pony
The same thing would probably happen if storm made it into the gulf GOM this year
The Dr. wrote, "It's unusual to see one storm do this in a season, let alone three--and all in the same place!"

I agree that it is unusual for one storm to do this in a season... However, when conditions are just right for explosive developement, it seems likely that there will be more than one.
see more proof someone is engineering storms...

OrmondGuzzi,

I agree. We had no storms perform rapid deepening this year and atleast 2 last year. Also, the W. Pac has a weather pattern this year thats similar to ours last year. It's had strong high pressure ridging in the same area for most of the season same as we had a high over the eastern US for the majoirty of last season.
Check THIS OUT!!!!

Huge Extra Terrestrial Storm!!!! First of its kind!!!!

The West Pacific bears no resemblance to last years Atlantic season; Category 5s are as common over there as major hurricanes are in the Atlantic (and explosively intesifying storms). This season was the WPAC's version of 2005. It even had two 185 mph storms at the same time in a Fujiwhara effect! Or this season (most storms, but not as many strong storms, but it did have two 195 mph storms). The average number of storms in the WPAC is 27, 16-17 typhoons (hurricanes) and 8-9 major storms. This year is actually below normal so far with 20 storms and 12 typhoons, although the number of major storms in about average (9). El Nino has the exact opposite effect in the Pacific - more storms, especially strong storms.
Afternoon all! Seems all the major models want to develop something in the SW Carrib next week.
Rough week coming with Severe outlook in the Southeast ..and Miss ValleyLink
Taz seems you need to chill a bit it is Veteran day "Observed"
Progressive which model?
Was that in response to my post MichaelSTL? Cause I compared the similar steering currents rather then the number/strength of the storms.
That was interesting...THx!!
What are your guys perdictions for 2007?
How many storms?
Intensity?
Landfalls?

Any takes?
Taz if it wasnt for our veterans you wouldnt have a soapbox to stand up on...

it was bad enough i saw you running your mouth about me on other blogs , If you have a problem be a man about it and email the person... dont go running around behind peoples back...
Good afternoon,

Seems like a few global models are trying to develope something tropical in the western caribbean.Right now iam not putting to much stock on the GFS as its been wrong many times the season with its predictions.

Super typhoon CHEBI continues to make in the general direction of Luzon.CHEBI has also intensified at a very fast rate and is now a CAT 4.My prayers go out to those folks as they are once again threated by a super typhooon.

Here are some models and intensity guidance for CHEBI.

I can access all of those sites without any problems.
Well I went to bed last night with Wilma on my mind, and for the third time I woke up to Wilma!

Oh come on who didn't see this coming!

It is pretty warm for November here, and I have this coming my way:

Tropical Cyclone rapidly bombing out and about to hit northern Luzon...I MUST HAVE GONE BACK IN TIME!!!
West Pacific:

I uploaded this to ImageShack in case there are problems with the site (I don't have any problems with it).
It looks like Chebi went through an ERC prior to landfall.

If you're trying to get information from the landfalling point you're not going to find it. We just have to be patient until the damage assessments come in.
Here is a WV of the system. Note the absence of a well-defined eye.

Thanks it's all working again here too. Kept getting couldn't find server..all good now.
I know I have just arrived, but I have to go already. I'm going to be out of town all weekend. My dad is throwing a company party. See Y'all next weeek!
I know, the thing looks like an egg!
Whatever you do 1900 don't go to the business meatings, their boring as hell!
Apparently Chebi has weakened from 145mph to 130mph.
There is an eye, you just have to look real close.

alt
Actually, 115 kts is 135 mph (Category 4 is 114 kts or higher or 131 mph or more, so you round to 135; 115 kts is about 132.5 mph). The Wunderground maps need to be fixed; another error is that they have 155 mph as Category 5 wnen it should be 4 (not to mention the errors with storms crossing the dateline... LOL).

...WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM PST THIS AFTERNOON FOR THE ENTIRE WILLAMETTE VALLEY...CLARK COUNTY IN WASHINGTON...AND THE LOWER COLUMBIA AND INTERSTATE 5 CORRIDOR IN SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON...

A WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM PST THIS AFTERNOON.

SOUTH WINDS OF 20 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH ARE EXPECTED LATER THIS MORNING AND THIS AFTERNOON AHEAD OF A RATHER STRONG PACIFIC COLD FRONT. DUE TO SATURATED SOILS FROM RECENT HEAVY RAINS AND FLOODING...THESE WINDS COULD BREAK TREE LIMBS OR TOPPLE TREES WHICH COULD LEAD TO PROPERTY DAMAGE.

A WIND ADVISORY IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS ARE FORECAST TO BE 31 TO 39 MPH OR GUSTS WILL RANGE BETWEEN 45 AND 57 MPH. WINDS OF THESE MAGNITUDES MAY CAUSE MINOR PROPERTY DAMAGE WITHOUT EXTRA PRECAUTIONS. MOTORISTS IN HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES SHOULD USE CAUTION UNTIL THE WINDS SUBSIDE.

This could happend later!

...HIGH WIND OUTLOOK FOR NORTHWEST OREGON AND SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON FOR LATE SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT...

COMPUTER MODELS ARE COMING INTO INCREASING AGREEMENT ON THE POSSIBILITY OF A SIGNIFICANT WIND EVENT FOR SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST OREGON LATE SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT. CURRENT TRENDS OF THE COMPUTER MODELS SHOW A VERY DEEP LOW PRESSURE CENTER COMING ONSHORE ACROSS SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON SUNDAY NIGHT. IF THIS OCCURS...IT COULD PRODUCE VERY STRONG AND DAMAGING WINDS ALONG THE COAST AND OVER THE COASTAL MOUNTAINS AND EVEN IN THE CASCADES. WINDS COULD ALSO GUST TO AT LEAST 60 MPH IN THE INLAND VALLEYS. DAMAGE COULD BE EXACERBATED BY THE VERY WET SOILS FROM THE PERSISTENT RAINFALL AND FLOODING OF THE RECENT WEEK.

A HIGH WIND OUTLOOK IS ISSUED TO ALERT USERS OF THE POTENTIAL THAT A HAZARDOUS WINDSTORM MAY DEVELOP. IF CONDITIONS CONTINUE TO PROGRESS TOWARD DEVELOPING HIGH WINDS SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND SUNDAY NIGHT THEN A HIGH WIND WATCH WILL BE ISSUED FRIDAY OR SATURDAY. PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGED TO CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS AND DISCUSSIONS ON THIS POTENTIAL HIGH WIND EVENT.

Now they're getting me excited!!

Looks like it landed just north of Casiguran. It's been more than 2hrs for some observations there. At 10' elevation, the near 40' waves don't look welcome.

It's been a crazy night here on the blog!

Taz got hijacked my the Trolls. I'm serious this is crazy.
I may have to eat my words about the "vampirecane" scenario.
Send mail to the Admin Mike. Let's not add to the junk on the blog.
Well I have little knowledge about Taz's situation. He must have gaven out his password and David got ahold of it. I guess it's his problem now. LowerCal, what's a Vampirecane?
I made a rather trollish remark about MichaelSTL's comment about a CMC model run yesterday.

I was poking fun at the idea that 95E would suck the life out of Rosa and go on to become a hurricane, a "vampirecane".
I see nothing trollish in that. Infact that is very possible.
Compared to some of the comments I've seen here lately I suppose not but it could have started an argumentative exchange. To Michael's credit he just ignored it, lol.
Ha! well I try to be really upfront with other people.
But I love to argue!
I'd actually seen the CMC doing the same thing (the vampire scenario) much earlier and it seem like an impossible solution then. Now it's all happened except for the hurricane. I think I'll be wise now and just not comment on that part. ;)

BTW, got rain?
You are young. I am not. I'd rather persuade than argue. :)
7.89 in and plenty more on the way. Apparently we could have a really nasty wind storm of the way.
Posted By: LowerCal at 9:29 AM GMT on November 11, 2006.

You are young. I am not. I'd rather persuade than argue. :)

LOL!! I'm sorry, I don't manipulate other people.
I'm a hard person to get past because I think for myself.
That's not typical El Nino. Hopefully you won't anything else like this for the rest of your ?rainy season.

I'll be glad when that jet stream finally migrates south.
Well I hope I didn't come off as an beep. How about we talk to eachother like human beings?
All I care about this winter is getting snow and wind. It looks like I'm going to get at least one of those things.
People don't like/want to be manipulated. It's not an effective method of persuasion. I'm talking about appealing to a person's better nature. :)

That's good that you can think for yourself at your age. Some people take a lot longer if they ever do.

You don't come off as what you said but you might edit that comment for the sake of the younger members.
Anything in particular you'd do with the snow and wind or do you just enjoy that weather?

Frankly I'd like to have a really strong thunderstorm. I've heard thunder twice in the last two years. I'm originally from Florida. I really miss that kind of weather.
Edit I will.
I had a super cell thunderstorm come right over my house. Somehow I herd it coming and dived to the floor when the thunderbolt hit my house. It felt like the whole room was shaking and all the electricity in my house turned of and came back on within a matter of seconds! It's not as fun as you might think!
beep, LOL.

The closest I've been to a lightning strike is about 100 feet. I was indoors looking out the window toward where it struck. I jumped backward 5 feet but didn't even realize it for several seconds.

It's amazing what many people will ignore when they are being told what they want to hear.

BTW he was not appealing to their better nature.
Obviously, but it's so much harder for people to see through the lies. I mean for me I actually have to think about it a lot to get anywhere politically!
Explain "think about it a lot". Do you mean to sort out the truth so you can form a valid opinion?
I can get really close to figuring it out, When suddenly I become very perplexed. At that point it's best just to go back and start from square one.
Yes infact sometimes my opinion turns out to be anything but mainstream!
I believe a lot of the problems we have start with communication breakdowns.
Another big part of it is overstating the minor problems in government, as opposed to the more serious issues.
I agree. I think misunderstandings far outnumber genuine disagreements.

Something totally unrelated. How can some spell so poorly when the comment box has a spell checker. Don't they wonder about the dotted red underlines? :D
That is manipulation - misdirection of attention (the overstating minor problems).
Hmm, maybe it isn't totally unrelated.
Sorry I left you hanging there.
I would love to continue this peaceful transaction of words, but it must wait. You see my energy level has gone down substantially since I came to consciousness, so sleep is the only remedy.

Mike
Morning wishcasteboy, it's 57 degrees in Tampa this morning, thats as cold as i want to get. had enough of the cold weather all those years i lived in Illinois.
Also agree with the sleep idea. only thing bad about a day off is you have to stay on your normal sleep pattern or you get all screwed up. work 7p-7a. so i stay up all night.
Good night Mike.
stormy3 I don't want to get too far off my schedule so I'll have to say good night also.
Goodnight everyone!
WAKE UP YOU BUNCH OF LAZYBONES>>>its morning, at least where I am.
I heard you yelling Pottery!
And here is the weather, based upon personal observation, while scattering corn for chickens..........light overcast, wind calm, occasional thunder from the south, temp about 74, humidity high. Time 8:34 am.A good day for sweating...........
Mornin Rand, whats your plan ??
Our humididy took a dive finally this week....36% yesterday. Hi near 80....lows near 60. Been perfect here.
The plan today....some chores this morning....then watch the annual air show here this afternoon.
Sounds like a good plan. Went to the airshow at OSKOSH a few years aback. INCREDIBLE. They had to shut down part of the approach for a while, because it was a cold night, a man woke up, zipped his small nylon tent shut, went to the stage area, temp rose, tent took off as it heated up, spent 1 hour hovering about, upside down. Great.........
LMAO Pottery! Didn't that get photographed? Seems like I remember seeing a tent floating around in a photo.
I'm sure it did. The other fun thing, we were pulled up next to some guys from Tennesee I think it was. They had found and rebuilt an old biplane they found in a barn somewhere. Fabulous piece of work. The Judges gave them a prize for the category, and said " if it flies, you have a chance at the " best of show ".. They spent 28 hrs without stopping, with engineers from NASA and everywhere trying to figure out the timing on the motor. Cranking the prop, cranking , cranking, cranking. Eventualy they got it to run and a Nasa test pilot took it up 3 feet, for 100 yds, to enormous applause, and they won. They were drunk for the rest of the show, with their arms hanging down like orangoutangs from spinning the prop..........
with their arms hanging down like orangoutangs from spinning the prop..........

LOL....great story.
Have a good day...gotta go.

Yes, insurance rates on Saturn are going up.
Good Morning all. Looks like Chebi is down to a cat 2.

Read back a little, the red underlined mispelled words in the comment box LowerCal mentioned...Where? Here? lol, I certainly have no such feature:)
Good news from the Phippines, no casualties reported yet and damage minimal.
Hey sandcrab...Good news i see.

"They spent 28 hrs without stopping, with engineers from NASA and everywhere trying to figure out the timing on the motor."
An engineer is not necessarily a mechanic.
That was one thing I found out during storm responses - a good mechanic/electrician is in demand, you're a medic? Got plenty of those, You're a mechanic?!!
The gist so far was alot of flooding, power loss, stuctures damaged. No reported deaths yet:)

The Philippines name for Chebi is Queenie.
Not a tropical wave (20E) - A tropical River
