Yep, one of the first "tricks" I learned was to shoot continuous-release or whatever it's called. 3fps on my D3k, now ~6fps on my D7k. Especially "flighty" (haha) subjects like birds'n'bugs, you gotta maximise your chances of getting *something*.

Thanks for the answer, Clabo. I would not have guessed it has to be so hit and miss.

[Hmm, lots of weirdness going on, keep refreshing the page and this comment *didn't* stick, so I'm resubbing it. Hope it won't be a duplicate.]

Yeah, center-spot focus, tracking turned *OFF*, high zoom, and take *lots* of shots while AF bangs the lens around getting the various pieces in/out of focus. Sometimes you get lucky. :D

My 70-200mm f/2.8 will literally "bang" back'n'forth as it shifts focus so fast from bird to various branches. Just keep shooting rapidfire and nonstop, 'cause it happens too fast for you to try to "catch" it when it's focussed on the bird.

Ferinstance, I got this one

which has branches in front of and behind the critter, and I just had to take a bunch of shots as fast as possible in the 2-3sec before he flew off. AF seemed to be locking on to everything *but* the critter, but I did get this one that was properly focussed.

Luck, luck, luck, it sometimes seems. :D

Now here's a tricky photo situation. How does one get the camera to focus on the bird, rather than the branches?

Anyone know? Thanks.

About gardner48197

8/2015: Greetings from Michigan, where we get quite a wide variety of weather changes throughout the four seasons! Originally I found this site, for the weather, and the photos kept drawing my interest! Decided to get my first digital camera in 2010, and have since upgraded to a Nikon P530. Truly an amazing, eye-opening hobby! This is a great community, so many excellent photographers and friends, so little time! I do read and appreciate every comment and email that I receive! I would like to thank everyone who contributes, for all of the great inspiration and feedback! Sometime down the road I would still like to get a DSLR camera, but for now I just hope to send a small view of life from the Great Lakes State. Home of the University of Michigan Wolverines! Go Blue! -James
