Cowpens, SC (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: Looks like somebody's pet to me. It came walking up through my cousin's yard. I looked online and I didn't see any listed for South Carolina that looked like this. It was about ten inches to a foot around. it went and burrowed down under some wet leaves in a gully.

Does anyone have a clue how old he is to be that large?
It was very pretty. The yellow under his neck is the bottom shell.

This is a red-eared or Elegant slider turtle and is native in your area. These are the source of the small green turtles (the young are green) that used to be sold as pets, but I don't believe they're available any more. People are too afraid of salmonella infections to keep pet turtles much any more.

About KittenEileen

KittenEileen

Living in upstate SC is quite a delight. I've lived here all my life except for about 18 months. I have the privilege of rearing my 14 year old grandniece. I love teaching her all the things I taught my two sons. Painting with oils and watercolors are a couple of hobbies I have as well as photography. I love my animals and would love living the bucolic life if I could but this is about as close here as I will ever come. I so enjoy seeing all the photos from all around this wonderful world of ours. Keep posting so this little old southern grandmother can appreciate all God Created.
