Andrews, NC (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: It was such a wow morning as we took a drive over to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to do a long hike up to Charlie's Bunion from Newfound Gap. We never made it all the way because the snow and ice was super thick on the Appalachian Trail, still unmelted from the big snow storm that was a result of Hurricane Sandy. On the way there though, we found lots of gorgeous photo fodder including this pretty covered bridge in the little town of Granny's Squirrel...

Image Description: Painted red, an eye-catching covered bridge in the middle of the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina sits pretty under a blue dawn sky. The big oak trees in the pasture cast a golden glow on the frosty field as the sun peeks through the branches with her warming rays....

A big thank you friends for stopping by to view, admire, rate, and write a note!
Yes, this tiny town is called Granny's Squirrel and we get a chuckle about it every time we drive by to go east to the Nantahala River area. It is just a small community with a church and several homes tucked into the mountains. I would love to know the history of the name!
This bridge is the rebuilt version. The original collapsed just a couple of years ago. It goes over just a gully and not even a mountain stream, although I am sure there was a stream there years ago but has been routed now into piping. The bridge is so eye-catching though, being right next to the roadway!

Very nice pic! I've been meaning to ask what brings you to these parts? I'm over on the TN side of the park... and I've yet to see a covered bridge since I left PA!
