Breezy Point, NY was damaged beyond comprehension during Superstorm Sandy. Besides a storm surge that lifted house off their foundation. There was a devastating fire that destroyed 126 during the storm. The firemen who came to put out the fire couldn't even get to the homes to do their job. The water was too high, the wind was blowing at 80mph, and their equipment was moved earlier to higher ground. This is one photo of hope.

Here is a news report.
Fire officials have determined the cause of the fires that destroyed more than 120 homes in Breezy Point during Hurricane Sandy.
Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said rising sea water made its way into electrical systems at a home at 173 Ocean Avenue.

First responders were unable to access the area because of severe flooding from the storm surge, allowing the fire to grow and burn for several hours.

Strong winds also helped it spread faster.

The fire burned for about 10 hours. It was put out after the storm at around 6:30 a.m.

One hundred and twenty-six homes were destroyed and 22 others were damaged.

Such sadness with disasters. It seems like it takes longer & longer for repairs to be made after major storms to this area. 5 years after Katrina there were still houses on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain with blue roofs.(fema tarps)
5 months after Isaac there is still park piers that look just like they did the day after the storm & bridges to boat ramps still out.
Hopefully the NY area will bounce back sooner.

The residents of Breezy Point are resilient, but this damage was hard to swallow. Have watched a lot of coverage. Some residents are confused about whether to rebuild.

and all practically within sight of bustling Manhattan/NYC..hard to fathom such destruction..total destruction next door to normal living..no wonder it's been hard to get aid into these areas! a wonderful and sobering image Linda!

This photo tells more than one powerful and moving story, but it's still, for me at least, a very, very sad image. I live along the Connecticut coast and had damage also, but I look a this and feel like a really lucky person. My heart aches for those who's lives have forever been changed. Thank you for posting and caring.
