The Lighting of Ledoux is an annual function that happens in Taos on Ledoux street, the community’s first art district. More than 1,000 farolitos are placed along the street, as well as luminarias (little bonfires) where people gather to get warm and visit with each other, or as seen at one bonfire tonight, where marshmallows on willow switches were being toasted over the fire. Here in northern N.M., the paper sacks with the candles inside are called farolitos, not luminarias.

At the State of the Union address on Jan. 22, 1970, President Nixon stressed the importance of environmental protection and said he asked congress to support a $10 billion clean water program.
